Welcome back to another week of the Blurred Spectrum podcast. We hope you enjoyed all of our previous episodes. But we have now entered into a specific type of season, a specific type of month where the scariest things come out on your screen, it's on your screen and into the streets. Yes, I am talking about white women drinking pumpkin spice. No, I am talking about your scary movies, your scary games, your haunted houses, your haunted pumpkin patches, everything that scares children and goes bumping them night. So today we are talking about scary video games, specifically horror video games. Not necessarily your normal thrillers, but those things that really get your adrenaline pumping and making you regret playing it in the dark. Those types of video games are the ones we're talking about today, ladies and gentlemen. So first I'm gonna go over our panelists for today, starting with myself, Suchino Shogun. To my left, probably your right if you're watching, Kaze. We have the doctor, we have shampoo bracelets. Yo, we have the black McCoy. We have Ms. Skittles, we have Sayone, and we have Joe T S G. So what we are going to do is uh the main point of this is we're gonna talk about not only uh in a general sense, horror video games, but our individual favorite horror video games if we played them and what makes them scary. What is it that uh really, like I said, sets our blood pump, makes our blood pumping, makes our heart race, things of that nature. So I'm not gonna give you some normalized definition, uh, but I will say that most individuals believe that a horror video game is a video game that specifically scares you, right? And um has more gory uh what's the word? Uh gory say your name.
SPEAKER_02Um elements um of harm, bodily harm, or mental disill, you know, disabilitating feeling, feeling of loss and desperation. Yeah, just kind of being alone.
SPEAKER_03And categorically that could go into uh uh a horror action adventure, a horror psychological, a horror thriller, uh horror survival, thank you. Uh so all of these are different categories that still fall fall under this specific genre. Um, but what we'll do is uh of course we'll go around and then we'll group up. But let's start with uh Kaze, uh, do you have a uh favorite horror video game or a video game that you played before uh that um you can say still wreaks havoc on the back of your mind? I think wreaks havoc is a strong word. Uh um I don't know, I think I think there's gonna be a favorite horror game, and it's gonna be like the the most effective one. Because I think the most successful uh horror veil game I played was Dead Space because I played the first level and I stopped. So it's like, yeah, nope, I don't need to start.
SPEAKER_05I don't think that's like the end result they're looking for as far as the game is concerned, but that's not. I mean, someone did something right, you know, when they were up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like the way the way this melanin works, I was like, you know, I had I had all this like all this like suffocating like fear and like horrible shit happening everywhere. The sound design that game was so fucking good, like and it's like so I can look in this screen and like feel terrible, or I can just go turn this way and be cool, and I just I just turn the screen off. Oh but um mind my business. But my uh my favorite uh horror video game is definitely uh definitely Resident Evil 4. Um and Resident Evil 4 definitely kind of lightened up on the on the horror aspects and kind of got got a bit more action gaming, which which definitely like hurt definitely hurts the horror aspect a bit. But there was definitely like certain enemies and situations in that game that like definitely had you on the edge of your seat. The uh the enemies were super dangerous, so like you were definitely like scared of just like walking around. The atmosphere was like suffocating. Um, you know, it was a really it was a gorgeous game when it came out on GameCube originally, but about to say, and um yeah, right yeah, I think Resident Evil 4 is my uh is defin is definitely my favorite. Okay. Okay. Um so I will send it over to Joe.
SPEAKER_10What makes it scary? Um, so my favorite horror would have to be from the Silent. So the first Silent Hill. Um for me it's so I played the game when I was like six or seven years old. Oh god at night. Uh because my dad still slight story, slight story time. So my dad's a huge horror fan as well, as far as video games, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, um, the Alan Walker, Alan Waker.
SPEAKER_08Alan Wake, yeah.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, that as well. Um Alan Wake, I was I was fine because I was older. But Silent Hill, the music, the that like eight-bit PlayStation graphics, just what the fuck was going on.
SPEAKER_01It it doesn't pass. It really does.
SPEAKER_10And then playing a game at night and just the music, just oh forget about it. Um not necessarily a horror game, but Dragon Age Origins, like that game I I think really played upon um and then characters, and really getting attached to characters and then seeing them die. Like the first half of the game, like you're introduced to this character who is brutally murdered, like at the beginning, and then just the music, the the just the music and graphics is usually what makes a strong, I think, a horror game for me at least. As far as like ambiance goes. Um but yeah, it's not like it was my favorite. Dragon Age Origins is more of a dark fantasy, but it were all right.
SPEAKER_03So I will go next. Uh I am not one for horror video games in any way, shape, or form. Um, it is uh not my thing. Uh it is not my choice to uh put myself into a situation where um uh I may need to punch someone or something. I don't got time for it. I don't like breaking technology. It's part of the fun.
SPEAKER_02Um so he's a black character that survives the movie. That's all that is.
SPEAKER_05You know, probably because I'm not there. That's completely 100% not there. He's a black character who's watching one of the news the next day, like, damn, I hate it. I want to not have to that cabin. But um, it'd be cute to go out and play in the woods, bitch. Play in the woods.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Um, yeah, so uh there are not many games that I play. I mean, there were a lot of games, uh horror-based games that were like in the arcades when I was younger. Uh so like a Resident Evil, um, there's another one, like House of the Dead. House of There it is. House of the Dead is always at somebody's movie theater or standard arcade. So I played those. Um, I think because I was concentrating more on just keeping them at a distance, and I would see the uh zombies or the undead coming towards me to bow bah bah a headshot. That's how I got so good at being a sniper at headshots in video games, is keeping them shits at a distance. So, but I can't count those as something that was fun or happily my favorite horror game. Then I did some research for this episode, and I said, okay, well, what are the games that have actually played our horror game? And that's when I came across uh Alice Madness Returns. It's one of my favorite games of all time, probably top 20. Um, it is it's a psychological horror thriller. Um the concept of the game is you know, Alice in Wonderland, of course, she uh uh awakens and you know, she based off the regular story, she awakens and she's back at home and she's learned a lesson about appreciating people and the things that she does because she's a spoiled aristocrat. But in this particular uh uh game, she uh no, she actually went around like killing people uh when she was under this uh hypnotic drug and they put her in an insane asylum. Um, and as the game starts, she's awoken after returning from uh out to Wonderland the first time. Um returned from Wonderland, and she's desperate to go back because she's kind of going through withdrawals, and she finds ways, whether it be through drugs or alcohol or just uh psychotic episodes where she falls back into Wonderland, but it's a twisted, dark variation of what the original storyline was. I I recommend it to anybody. Um, but you know, it that's personally mine because it was uh it was plenty of gore. Uh, like you know, in in the in the movie, you you hear, you know, the um the Queen of Hearts, you know, she has uh blood red roses. Nah, you don't know blood red until you see the queen would actually like take blood out of people and put it in her garden and it makes the roses grow. Like it's the type of thing saying that's like, oh, that's so pretty. Like that's the type of thing that it is. So it was it was really, I enjoyed it. Um my honorable mentions, which weren't my games, were stuff uh that my um uh uh younger niece and nephew play, things like Benny in the ink machine, uh things like Slenderman, things like um Freddy's Five Nights at Freddy's even horror anymore.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Because the thing is, when Five Nights at Freddy's came out, it was supposed to be this like kind of generic game that we all played and you know we got over once we finished it. But once like the next kind of generation of kids started playing it, they've been up, they've had like five newer versions of Five Nights at Freddy's and they've reimagined it. Now they're about to release um the one on console that because it hasn't been on console before. Now they're releasing the console version because people are into this game and they want to have jump scares and they want to be like my nephew. I came around the corner in my house and my nephew goes, Oh my gosh, you jump scared me. What are you, five? Oh, what are you putting Freddy fast pairs pizza? I'm like, I need to get out of my face. So there's a market for it, and they like to be scared for someone, or oh, the other one, mother, I despise mother because they took Furbies, mixed it with gremlins, and put them in a house. Um, and it's it's really bad because like it's literally like a bad, like imagine one of your toys when you were a kid having being battery powered, and then the batteries are slowly dying, like a smoke detector.
SPEAKER_08So it goes, I just want to have you. Oh, hell no.
SPEAKER_03See, see, even say your name with it.
SPEAKER_10I had an army of Furbies and they all did that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I took out I had a Furby and in the middle of the night it would say, feed me, and I had to take out the fucking batteries and put it back in the of the closet. I can't do that, I can't have nothing at 2 o'clock in the morning. So I took out them damn batteries like fuck this shit, and I'm putting it back in my closet. I couldn't do it.
SPEAKER_05I've got my early childhood. I mean, I guess because RG2 sang, it made it a bit better, but still it made it be more palatable.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I had a I had a Barney. Oh man. So don't do that to Barney. This motherfucker in the middle of the night, like, you know, I love you too. Not anymore. And when I say I I snip the cords to this motherfucker, this is my cousin's story, didn't care. Oh god. I I opened it open the thing, we put the battery in, cut the damn cords, put it back in. And when I say this motherfucker still talk. I mean, I got I got used to it. I was I saw this cussing at it. I got school like four hours. You do creepy shit while I'm not here. So let's uh uh move over to uh shampoo bracelets. Uh your favorite horror game and why what made it scary?
SPEAKER_06I was gonna pick uh fear for this, but the the issue with that game was I got to the part in the elevator where the chick just appears in the elevator and starts fucking with you, you can't shoot her, and no matter how much you shoot, nothing happens. I wasted a whole clip of that chick and then died. Oh no! I was out of ammo by the time I left the elevator. So uh, and I never played that game again after that. Uh never touched it once. So I was like, I had to change up actually. Um there was a game that I actually did get to try out, but I never really thought of it as a horror game, which is kind of stupid that I think about it. And it's Dogie Dogie Literature Club. Oh yeah, first off, that game is a whole mindfucker. That is like that was that was actually a tiring game playing it because of all the crazy shit that just goes on in it. Like at first, you're thinking you're just you know, anime girls, little not one of those novel games, you're just reading books or doing, you know, like size of life type stuff. This is me trying to get into this. Is how I was trying to get into Sice of Life anime and manga, but um, yeah, it was at first I was thinking I was getting into like a size of life type manga anime thing, and then I know one of the characters killed himself. Out of blue, like you walk in the room, but she's hanging there, and it's like, oh, what the fuck did I just walk into? So uh it was and then after that, you know, you got I'm not gonna spoil anything, but it's just it's everything from you watch a chick literally stab herself to death because she wants you so bad. And it's so romantic. Yeah, yeah. It's like it's like she kills me. Yeah, like this whole this whole place is fucked up. And then the game starts doing some really weird shit with your saves. And it's just it's it gets it gets like Metal Gear stylish-ish at one point. They start just like telling you what's on your telling you what's on your hard drive type shit. It's like, all right, bruh. Uh I never finished that game either. When they started telling me what was on my computer, is when I had to stop.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like they started telling me all your games know what's on your computer. They didn't say nothing.
SPEAKER_06You know, they know all your games, they know all yeah, exactly. It's that type of shit. Like it was like it was like when it gets to that part, that's when I'm like, the game is this is real life.
SPEAKER_02Because we start talking about your search browser, and we don't need them problems, so I don't need that shit. You know, I was www.
SPEAKER_09No the first run, too.
SPEAKER_04Like it is like it takes so much time before it devolves into something different from oh, this keeps a little animal game. Like, I remember when I was told a player, he was, you know, Joe told me, like, hey, just play this and just finish it to the end. Just do that, make sure that you finish it. Okay, because it seems like a super normal game for like hours and hours, and then it just starts to break down. Like it's weird, and it's okay, what the hell's going on? It's it's such beautiful, like metaphor, you know.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, literally, it is, and it's it's like like he said, it starts out like I want to say, like the first 40 minutes of the game just seems like a normal slice of life type of thing, and then shit breaks down. I mean, it's just like everything just changes out of nowhere. So, yeah, that was uh that is actually one of my favorites in terms of horror games that I've actually played. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But that is true horror. When you I mean, think of all the characters in a video game or in a movie, they're thinking this is just gonna be regular, you know, nine to five, a regular day, and then shit just breaks down. So that is what the essence of horror is when you least expect it. Just because we're looking at it as a third person, we're seeing it through different eyes. But as first person, we don't know what's going on, we don't know what's at the end of the road. So, I mean, that is a classic what horror is. So that's pretty good.
SPEAKER_05And it's interesting because that's what's more fun to be talking about the look it up. Yeah, you wouldn't have looked it up. I should I would say those that's actually one of the more beautiful aspects of horror games is like the the the fear of the unknown isn't simply just the fear of the unknown, it's the it's the manipulation of the senses of the one involved in like the actual game and not being able to pinpoint or trust what it is you're seeing or what you're not seeing. And I think that games like Silent Hill and um well, since I'm already talking, one of the games that I I um love-hate relationship with is um Outlast. Um, Resident Evil already like traumatized me as a child, so I never touched another one ever since. But um Outlast was that game that hit me hardest in like my adult life because it was like it was the first game or first kind of like horror theme game that I came across where you you there was no fighting back. You you just have to live, you have to survive the entire night. And all you have is a camera with a light on it. And you just and the batteries will go out on the camera. So if you ain't got if you can't find any batteries in the goddamn game in this asylum that you're stuck in while there's shit roaming around trying to kill you, then you're just walking around in the dark until you can find some batteries to put in your camera so you can see and find your way out. Like there's like if you get caught, there's no you ain't got no hands, you can't even swing the camera, bitch. That's it. That's it, you're about to die. That's all you got to do. Unless you run and go hide somewhere else.
SPEAKER_08It's it's a fatal frame.
SPEAKER_05Like unless you run and go hide. Like there I remember one scene specifically like there was like this um this insane person who was like this like insane berserker um person creature who was walking around and you I will like I was I was hiding in the um in like a locker and they kept just walking around and passing right by it, and at one point stopped in front of it. And I I almost like threw my controller across the room and just like left because I couldn't do it, it was stressful. But it just walked away and it was it was so much, it was so much.
SPEAKER_03And that's a key word. That that's another reason why I don't play hard games. Stress. I don't have the time, I got stress on my real life. I have no need to go and purchase a 59, 49, 39, 399 stress giver. I ain't got time for it.
SPEAKER_02No, I can make you appreciate your daily stress though, because you leave that stress like, damn, I'm glad I don't have to get killed. Let me go back to my stress that I'm used to.
SPEAKER_03Nope, I wish that was the case.
SPEAKER_06I got one more question before we get to you. I got one question. Are we including like, do you look, do y'all look at stressful games as like kind of a horror game as well? Like, have you ever thought to do that?
SPEAKER_02A lot of games haven't been a lot of games, most games are stressful as fuck. So that means every game I played is is is a horror game.
SPEAKER_05Like, that would just stress me out.
SPEAKER_06I include League of Legends in that as well. Um I was wondering about a game, um, a series actually of horror uh games, which I don't think too many people include in that, but in a way, it's a whore as well. Dark Souls, the whole series. It is classified as a horror game. Dark Souls is that okay, I think I can see why. Yeah, now that that then if that's case that yes, that is my favorite. I played all traumatizing experiences. I played every single one of them. The only one that I played. Legs too, and that's because at the time my daughter was just born, and I just didn't want to do that to save time. Gotcha.
SPEAKER_02I hate that game. I had watched the play Dark Souls. We used we had to literally use a YouTube walkthrough just to navigate the fucking game. There's no direction with that game.
SPEAKER_10That's the whole thing. That's the whole purpose of it.
SPEAKER_02No, that's the stress that I don't want. Why should I have to find it?
SPEAKER_03Oh, now you don't want the stress.
SPEAKER_02No, no, no, no. That's nonsensical stress. Like, at least this stress with the direction makes sense. So, like, if I don't know what the fuck I'm doing, there's no map. They're like, all right, well, get the point at the point A to point B. But I'm like, how? Yeah, there's no difference.
SPEAKER_03The problem with Dark Souls is like they they showed they showed you a lantern light on the other side of the map. And if you missed it or you ain't know what the fuck that meant, then good luck. Yeah, Dark Souls everywhere you go and lead somewhere. It might not where you think you need to go. And that's and that's the worst part. Like I watched Kaze play Dark Souls of one and two, right? And three. And three. And Bloodborne. And Bloodborne. And like, and I didn't do that. It's almost like secondhand smoke. Because I'm sitting there from playing the game. But like I have a like an eye for details. So like there's certain things I'm like, oh, does that move? Is that move? Is that great? Is that money? Is that currency? Do you have to pick up that? So I'm I'm looking, but you don't want to be a you don't want to be a backseat gamer. You don't want to sit behind and next to the person while they're playing the game. I'm sitting there like, no, what's up? No.
SPEAKER_02I like being I like being a secondhand, you know, um game player though. It's fun watching it because it's like you're watching a movie in a way. No, so I enjoy it.
SPEAKER_03I I also watched the Black McCoy play The Last of Us Two and I lost my shit while while they were traversing this uh this environment, this landscape with all these like staff people stabbing and blowing up and all types of shit. Now I'm good.
SPEAKER_01I love I love backseat driving, watching.
SPEAKER_05No, we can't no, because you can't you can't no backseat watch the sushi no shogun on some games that are stress-inducing because he got too much, he got too much critique. He got like how come you how come you not sneaking around? Because I don't want to fucking sneak around.
SPEAKER_03And that's the worst part. I'm watching Kate and the Black McCoy, the most not sneakiness, most running in and blowing shit up, most uh I got a gun and a sword. Why I gotta sneak type shit. Them niggas should be hot. You all playing gold.
SPEAKER_09Ninja, nigga beats in the words of the green prophet, we need more smoke. The smoke.
SPEAKER_03That's a stress I don't need in my life.
SPEAKER_02I don't need it. True. That means that you're meant to you're meant to, you know, play these games because it's obviously working for you. So you need to be like, okay, okay, right, right, right. No, no, no. No, that's it's a nice therapeutic stress. Therapeutic stress. Dark souls is a pain in the ass. Because you even when you finish it, it's like, what the fuck did I even do? I I feel so just like I didn't work on the brain.
SPEAKER_06That's why I gotta disagree. Dark Souls, that stress. The reason for that stress is because when you get through it, it feels that it's like getting through that really hard task and seeing the end result. At the time, the end result probably isn't that great, but you got through it. You know, it's a fact like like uh Ponti, there was a boss called Ponter Sullivan. I walk I fought this boss like seven times straight. It took me like an hour and a half with a great sword. I was sitting there and carried out Huh? Yeah, no, it was actually it was I actually love that sword. It was I love that sword all together. But uh it was uh like that battle was really hard. Then when you get halfway through the battle, he becomes two niggas. Now you got two on one. Both of them fly, both of them like pretty much do the same moves. It's like watching a mirror pattern. But then you learn that pattern, and then you beat him, and then you feel like you really accomplished something until you get back outside and realize you have no health, and shit's about to get really rough for you. Yeah, like learning how to ride a bike.
unknownIt really is.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, being dark souls was was super fascinating because it's kind of uh I never learned how to ride a bike, so I don't care those games ever. But like be at the end of Dark Souls, it's kind of uh all of the endings kind of move to a point where unless you know that you're all you're all it's all part of a process, and and you and you were not a it it depends unless there's a specific ending, you you were just you were just a cog in this machine. You did you did you didn't you didn't change how this world works. You just uh you know, you just you just made a few things happen and and all these things are gonna happen again. Yep. And it's uh you know, and it's kind of like real life. Yeah, exactly. Like just just because you overcame this great thing, don't mean don't mean that you know shit ain't gonna rain tomorrow too. That's true. So uh yeah, no, yeah, no. Dark Dark Souls is definitely um stressful. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's it's a horror game. Like Dark Souls is a strange horror game just from a real life perspective.
SPEAKER_03It's funny y'all talking about backseat gamers though, because when I when I played uh through Resident Evil 4, my my ex my ex was uh sitting there with the strategy guide on the couch, look looking at all look looking at all the shit I was missing. She was like, nah, there was something moving behind that house. Come on, I can't be around for a reason. Yeah, and uh they had they had like one enemy, it was like it was just like this blob and humanoid form, and and you would shoot this nigga, and nothing would happen, and he would hug you and fucking spikes would come out. And uh he was like he was like a walking iron maiden horrified. And that's what kind of and then I found out that you had to uh you had to like use like a special scope or something, and he had and he had these points inside his uh his these these uh is inside his body, you had to shoot those points to actually kill it. And uh and but the points like kind of moved inside his body too. So he's like shambling towards you, and you had to shoot these points before you hug you. That's it, that's that's your horror. So uh miss skills. On that note, do you have a horror game and why did it make why was it scary?
SPEAKER_01I mean, so so I'm I'm just gonna go ahead and say Silent Hill. Um, it was like the first video game I played where where I I actually felt something. Like it was like, ooh, like I'm playing the game and I'm by myself at home. And you know, like what is about to come out? Because I like like anytime I'm hesitant to move and and I'm not actually in the game, I'm just like like on the controller, like do I go in that do I want to go in that space? I I don't I don't know about that. And then the nursing, I'm like, what kind of hospital is this? Like I just wasn't ready. Like I was like, this is this is again, uh, it's a psychological horror. So it's just like it would literally fuck it with me. So I mean, I would definitely say that that's that's one while we're talking about this. Would y'all consider Dante's Inferno a horror game?
SPEAKER_09Ooh, yeah. I would I wouldn't have a horror game.
SPEAKER_05What uh in the in the lust level, can we talk about these like when you follow Cleopatra at the end and she had all the uh little baptized demon babies coming out her nipples?
SPEAKER_10I don't know, I was really turned on by that game.
SPEAKER_05Um I don't really comment up anymore, that joke was wild, it was truly wild, but um I mean I'm I'm kind of with Joe because I lost like when like the tentacles are like slithered, like came whipping out of the gentleman.
SPEAKER_10I was like, oh I'm not I'm not it was the babies coming out the nipples for me. Yes, I was like, I feel like I shouldn't like this, but I like it. I don't know why.
SPEAKER_05I was like, I shouldn't I shouldn't be into this, but I am. It's like the most recent episode of the boys. We're um in uh in like the facility.
SPEAKER_03I shouldn't be into this, but I am.
SPEAKER_02Oh but it's interesting.
SPEAKER_05It's funny because it had a it had a much more in in-depth like skill tree than a lot of the games that we were playing now.
SPEAKER_10I mean, I still put it in like the same category as like Bayonetta or um, dark siders or something.
SPEAKER_03An action game, yeah, with hor horror elements. I I think I think there's a there's a difference between people who just kind of sprinkle horror elements in their game and an actual horror like horror game. Like I think I think a lot of horror games, like they uh I think a lot of the core horror games, they uh the the person the person the person that they expect you to be is also horrified and doesn't want to be in there be in be in that predicament.
SPEAKER_07Right.
SPEAKER_03Whereas like your your character in Dark Souls, that motherfucker's just depressed. Yeah. Like like all the all the horrifying shit in Dark in Dark Souls that that that niggas that niggas used to that. And it's and it's just kind of you know creepy to us. But he's but you your character is just as fucked up as the rest of the world is, you know, versus versus like a like a Resident Evil where you you know you was a regular ass nigga yesterday. Now all these horrific things are happening, you're confused, they're confused. You know, like Dante's Inferno, that nigga went to hell himself.
SPEAKER_04Like I remember, you know, you mentioned earlier that, or I think it's gonna be before the podcast started, but the idea of a horror game is designed to make you consistently feel a certain way, you know, where it's not just like, oh well, there's one part that's scary, but then everything else is kind of geared towards something else, like this consistent fear or whatnot by that standard. I think Dante's Inferno definitely meets like solid, like it's an action game, but definitely a solid action horror that's designed to consistently disgust you over and over. Like that is a really core part of that game. Like it's not even like I don't I don't probably argue it's more it's as at least as present as the action itself because it's everywhere, like everything is horrified.
SPEAKER_07Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Like about something like Bayonetta, like it's got the action mechanics of a bayonetta, but like like hell of Bayonetta is nowhere near that level of disgust. Like even with a little bit of time that you're in it, like Dante's Inferno really does a good job of just making the environment something that is terrifying and just your senses.
SPEAKER_05And alive. Yeah, and a lot, yeah, exactly. And I think the I think my favorite thing about the Dante Inferno game and the environment is that how the how you get immersed into the story as to why you're there in the first place. And it I think that one of the more telling aspects of horror games, or and I will just say the horror genre in general, is how it allows the the person involved in it or the viewer or the gamer to somehow relate to the narrative that's being, you know, that's being pulled together in the game. With Dante's Inferno specifically, it was like a mixture of kind of like religious dogma, um, and you know, the consequences and the the dissonance between what it means to have trust in, you know, your faith as well as trust in, you know, figures who are supposed to be conduits for that faith. Um and for those of you who don't know, like the the premise of the game is that Dante goes off on the crusades, of course, and he cheats on his wife after making a promise not to. And then he when he does, um the I think it was one of the cardinals or one of the priests or whatever, they say they're absolving them of all their sins. So he's like, Oh, okay, well, it didn't happen because you know I've been absolved of it and then he comes back, um, unknowingly knowing not knowing that his wife basically bet the devil that he wouldn't cheat on her, and then he comes back home. Right, and he comes back home and sees her basically getting dragged to hell, and he's like, Oh fuck. Like, and she's like, and she's looking at him like, Why? Like, why did you why did you lie to me? Why did you betray me as though he's dealing with that? Yeah, one job. Yeah, he had one job. And he thought because he thought because his sins were absolved that like it was okay to didn't have it, but like, no, that's not how and then the and Satan's like, nope, that's not how that works. And so now he ends up he ends up going to hell, um, killing or fighting or killing death for some reason. Um, and trying to get right to save her soul. Um, and that's and like having to confront all of the the wrongdoings or the the demons that he's had while going through hell, including his father, his ex-best friend, and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_00So it was really through all the all the levels of hell.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_00All the sins.
SPEAKER_05There was like a circle for every uh one of the seven deadly sets.
SPEAKER_01That shit lit. That that game was lit as fuck.
SPEAKER_03So let's throw it over to the doctor. You were a horror game.
SPEAKER_04My horror game, so I guess I'll start with like my second favorite, I think, which is uh Slender of Eight Pages, you know, the one of the best known like Slender Man games and whatnot.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I loved about that game was with really limited mechanics in a lot of ways, you know, like limited graphical stuff and whatnot, it's doing a good job of immersing you and conveying the sense of impending danger with the music speeding up and the little ambient changes and like flickering of lights and all this and the sounds. Like Slenderman did a really good job, and you know, we finally got caught. Like, you know, you had that jump scare, that kind of like the payoff for that slow buildup of fear. I think Slenderman did that really, really well. So it's definitely like I'd say my second favorite horror horror game overall.
SPEAKER_03My nephew still can't walk into the woods because of Slenderman. We have like we have a force behind our house. You guys see Slenderman back there?
SPEAKER_07Oh, no, no.
SPEAKER_05We're not too socioeconomically inclined to have Slender Man back here.
SPEAKER_03We're not. We'll go your first, your first ranking.
SPEAKER_04So my number one, it's a whole series, actually, is uh Five Nights at Freddy's.
SPEAKER_09So I know I love it.
SPEAKER_04And I think the thing that really drew me into it was it's very subversive in that these things shouldn't scare me, like this Chuck E. Cheese knockoff, you know.
SPEAKER_10Nah, they should scare you because of that reason. That's someone who has fear of Chucky since like six years old. I don't fuck with them.
SPEAKER_04It just really, you know, and then the jump scares and like how you have to kind of stress up monitoring all the um I haven't played it before. You're basically for the first game, you're just monitoring all the rings in this Chuck E cheese, but a lot of information missing at listen to it to make sure no one's coming in. You survive to the 6 a.m. Yeah, five days in a row. But yeah, like those that stress that builds up by just managing all of that when, oh, you know, the power goes out for a while, or you know, suddenly one of the cameras gets busted and whatnot. It just works really, really well. And the lore around Five Nights at Freddy's that they've built up over the course of the series is like really, really interesting. And it's really creepy involving, you know, stuff of like the souls of dead kids. I won't get too much into it, but like it's like look at Janae's face.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, child dealers are killer.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I mean, I love it. Like, it's definitely my favorite horror game series is because it's so it just takes all these elements and puts it together in a way that I wouldn't think works, but when you sit down and play it, like it just works so well together. No, so yeah, I love it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, I'm not mad at Five Nights and Freddy's. Like I said, my only gripe of it is the whole nephew thing, but like I agree, like, because I had to read up on the game before I like allowed him to play it. There's like the storyline. I it teaches it for me, it teaches a lot of valuable lessons. Like uh some of the kids who who who were killed or the souls of the kids were because they got too close to the stage after the people who worked there said, don't jump on the stage. So it's kind of like follow directions and you can stop. Like, and I don't know if it's wrong for anybody, but at least in the first one, some of the animatronics, animatronics that were on the stage were filled with the souls of the children that were either killed or eaten or taken away. So it's like, yes, just follow directions, take your ass home, stay with your mama, you know, just do cover things when you're in the traffic seat.
SPEAKER_06Like, if you watch your motherfucking kids, this wouldn't be a goddamn game. It wouldn't be a problem.
SPEAKER_03I will say that he really wants to go to Freddy's Fast Fairs now. He's been looking for it. Like, and the problem is there are trolls on the internet that keep putting actual uh Google Maps locations inside of Google. So he'll search it and he's like, Oh, look, it's in New York. And we're like, this is not what this is. This is a regular pizzeria. Somebody just said it was pretty fast. But wait, but now it's in Philadelphia. Okay, obviously it's moving, so that must mean it's not real. We're not going there. So yeah, that's that's a thing. But you know, I agree. It's a it's yeah. So I I actually grew up with a very good child.
SPEAKER_02I could tell. You must have an obedient child who didn't do shit wrong because you were triggered. You're like, if you just listen to directions, you'll have to be dead. So I can tell.
SPEAKER_04I think Silent Hill used gaslighting really, really effectively. And there's like questioning reality and whatnot and making you rethink like what how you thought that world worked.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. You just over there like, mmm.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I was um, so there I actually had like a flashback um because I I'm realizing I grew up I grew up with my own Five Night at Freddy. And there's this place um back in Georgia called Billy Bob's Wonderland. No, no, no, no, Billy Nothing. If you all are listening, just just Google Billy Bob's Wonderland, Georgia and you will see what they were terrifying. And mind you, this is the 90s, so technology wasn't that far along because you know, where we could make it look peripheral.
SPEAKER_03No, this shit was wonderland gonna turn into dead man wonderland. Y'all gotta put y'all phone down.
SPEAKER_09Jesus.
SPEAKER_05You gotta look for it, parable.
SPEAKER_01Oh no.
SPEAKER_02That title sounds like a horror movie in the game. This shit looks shit look crazy.
SPEAKER_07Oh Lord.
SPEAKER_01It's a monkey in a suit, but it's uh uh.
SPEAKER_03Well, let's round it up. Uh you guys, I'm sure your screen doesn't look like our screen. Of course, we're you know, we're um video conferencing to record the podcast, but on our screen, uh uh Miss Sayone, who's gonna round up our favorite video games, is in the center, so she kind of looks like Alice from the Brady Bunch. So I was touching with that wiggle. So, Miss Seone, your favorite video, your favorite horror video game, and why is it scary?
SPEAKER_02Okay, so my favorite horror video game of all time is Dead Space. And the ironic part about it was that I was a backseat driver of Dead Space. Um, and I was actually watching my ex play it because we both were blind as shit at the time. So the I had to help navigate, you know, basically things in the dark. But the reason why I love Dead Space was because it was so different, even still, I haven't seen any horror video games like it. You know, um it surrounds a character named Isaac and he goes off in space. I believe he's like a miner of sorts and he gets a call, like a um a distress beacon on the Ichimura that's kind of in space and you know no one's responding. No one knows what's going on. So he goes to investigate and all hell breaks loose. And you it's a first person, I don't know if you would consider it survivor, but it's like a hack and slash slash survivor. I don't know how you would classify that particular game. But you're by yourself. There is no backup. It's just you there's no creepy music either. It's just silence. And then there's something about just having no music you hear creaking doors, you hear a little bit of water, but it's just you and this creepy ass environment, not a lot of color um you know the hue of the you can always tell it's a horror movie or horror video game by the the colors chosen. It was grays, it was blues and it was black and that was it with splashes, splashes of red. And that was all that your senses could see. And it was just very vibrant. You had these creepy ass necromorphs which were actually mutations of humans. So you had these boomer like people they would explode and little baby placenta would come fuck you up. And so you're like nothing was safe the placenta was about to kill you the baby's allowed to kill you because the doggies were out to kill you everybody was going to kill your ass the children come out to kill you. So it's like you didn't feel safe and um the character design this came out in 2008 so for 2008 the graphics were insane. Even you know fast forwarding to 2020 I can still play that game it's like these graphics are pretty good. You know the coloring of the besides what the color the lighting it was the darkest shit. So you didn't know what the hell was coming at you. It came out you quick and you could see yourself dying very quickly like oh your head just got cut off you're dead like what the fuck like what happened you know and even when you wanted to go into your inventory when you wanted to see your life it was in real time. There was no pause screen it was in real time. So there was nothing that could stop you from getting killed or you know or watching somebody come at you. The uh also it had a little bit of like a I would say a play on Scientology. So it's like unitology which is interesting as well. That was the little religious cult, you know sorry if anybody said in Scientology, you know, but it was kind of you know going off of unitology saying that it was a cult and um it was just great because you felt alone there was no one else to help you it was a hack and slash and also a psychological thriller because the the main character was going fucking crazy. So you actually couldn't even trust your own character. You're like is this nigga is he? No he's not crazy too like shit you're all crazy and we're about to die. So I just loved it there's nothing um that's like it I think another one was condemned that was also a psychological uh whore as well and I would like to even say Bioshock because Bioshock was very dark yeah Bioshock was very dark um you know and it kind of had this like 1950s you know type of feel to it but everything was fucked up you know these kids are experimented on it was like some some very strange type of but it was it was beautiful and horrible at the same time. You had this I would say gothic noir feel to it. And um you know you had these little kids around this big ass syringe that's going to set people dry. I mean it was twisted but it was also you know very much a horror type kind of like a big O type of feel to it that I also enjoyed. So um I feel like we need more horror movie horror I would say video games like it because it's not always about jump scares. It's about the story and feeling alone and feeling kind of desperate and when you can walk away from the console and you have to watch some nice pretty shit before you go to bed that's how you know it did a good job.
SPEAKER_08That's true.
SPEAKER_02My fucking closet doors because I thought a necromarcome whip my ass so I was like turning off the doors and not in the funeral yeah no yeah yeah not whipping my ass yeah no so that's my favorite that's how you know you fucked up when you gotta watch cartoons afterwards I didn't see the question.
SPEAKER_03Another another really good one was uh was Bloodborne which is related to the Dark Souls series.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah yeah and I I think they did a better job as far as the actual like horror elements because uh uh dark Bloodborne was uh you know it was like based in like in a you know Victorian era and uh and it was based on uh Lovecraft horror so it was like it was much of like you know like fear of the unknown and like and there was actually a uh statistic a statistic in the game and the statistics uh represented your sanity and and the higher and the higher this uh this this uh statistic went it represented uh how how pretty much how crazy you were becoming and how loose your grip on reality was but but not only that your um these uh these horrors that that that you were fighting that shouldn't exist the the the crazier you got the stronger they got and not not only did they get stronger there were certain uh there were certain uh horrors that didn't even exist in the game until like there's a point in the game that you can't that you have to make yourself go crazy enough so you can perceive this this being so he can take you somewhere else like you can't you can't even conceive the the horribleness of this of this thing this god this godlike thing from the sky so he can take you to the next part of the game like it really it it it it delves really deeply into like uh you know love love crafting and yeah it was you know without some of the racism hopefully uh uh yeah yeah they left out most of the most of the races they did leave out a lot a lot of that also fun fact look look up the name of uh love craft's cat I'm curious I think another uh great video um that would excuse me video game would be onisha that's the first one as well yeah um it was at a it takes it back like it's like an Edo period um type of samurai but it was dealing with demons in hell and especially when yeah he had to go down the levels of hell uh well he was trying to get down to the levels of hell and all these creatures and it was really fucking creepy you know as well with the color scheme everything was very dark you were alone there was no one that was gonna help you um it was great because you saw that his sword absorbed the souls that also helped I'm going back like all when I was a child like 11 so I I remember um but that was a really that was like pre I would say I would say before I even really got into like Resident Evil because I hadn't really played that much but for sure that was something that was you could it was hack and slash hack and slash of some sort but it was you you were active it wasn't like a straight horror per se it was just trying to kind of I don't remember the process of the whole entire um um I would say the storyline of the game I don't remember but I remember there was puzzles as well. So and these puzzles if you didn't do the puzzle you'll die so it wasn't just like you know people coming out to kill you you couldn't even get this fucking puzzle out this door nigga you did. So I was like damn like what the fuck so that was also another good kind of like underrated horror video game of its time as well.
SPEAKER_03And then I'll also say uh specifically for a lot of the games that uh we've mentioned and I don't want anybody to say we left them out because you know there's thousands upon millions of games that have ever been existed but I know a lot of the games that we talked about uh were kind of based off of Doom and its whole uh franchise just the walking down a tunnel look left look right walking down a tunnel jump scares and you just have to fend off these you know volumes and volumes of monsters and of course it's evolved in its um uh aesthetic design and it's uh graphical design but you know still the core um games that were built off of like a dead space like a uh what's another game that was based off of it just a couple other ones um that are based off of it that uh got it to the level of the type of game that it was um also uh want to make sure we talked about uh we talked about psychological games so just a question for everybody what would you say is you know we talked about jump scares we talked about you know deep storylines that kind of start from the pleasantries and slowly go weird or crazy that lead you into a false sense of security there's the you know the gore the hack and slash that's you know repetitive but you know and we talked about psychological as well but what would you say is one of the ways that you can determine that you've entered into a psychological horror based game without it being like a same asylum or you know it you know kind of starting the storyline there.
SPEAKER_06I actually had a game that I and I I wanted to call out just to give some credit to because it's not your normal horror game and that is uh a mobile game or start out as a mobile game called Darkest Dungeon where yeah where it's uh where the whole game is just like you only play yeah it's like it's not like uh you're playing as a group of adventurers you just pick up a group of adventurers you can pick them up at like a bar and it it changes they change who the adventurers are as you keep going through but uh pretty much what it is that you take this group of adventurers into a dungeon this random dungeon trying to collect on treasure and then find out they got issues like like real deep issues like just random stuff fetishes alcoholism like stuff like that like like just random issues that just pop up in the dungeon and it's like you are locked them like they're chickens like it's just like oh you a lock necrophilia it was like like like you know like literally that's how they announced it to you so in terms of the psychological game like and it's like the deeper into these dungeons you get the worse that shit gets like like people have eating disorders out of nowhere and stuff like that. You know they can't insomnia is a is a characteristic that that confusion thing is actually a thing. Like if you if there's a dead body in the area this character performs better. Like it's like that's how the game works and that's how the game works so it's like it was it was one of the most interesting psychological games I've ever played because it's just like a fucked up game like you think it's dark as dungeon you just think you could go you know do some treasure heavy that's it like nah this there's some sick shit here. Yeah like it like look at alcoholism your person literally has to drink before they go into a dungeon otherwise the necropilia guy actually has to fuck bodies to gain box it's like it's like it's like he doesn't have to fuck bodies but there has to be a dead body in there so like pick the weakest guy kill him off break and just keep the body around oh no it's like it's stuff like that around it's like it's like it's like it's stuff like that. So it's like it's just some really weird it's like some really weird stuff in in each each bat each time you go into the dungeon it gets worse and worse and worse. Some of these traits can actually I'm good on that I'm good on that the funny part is some of the traits are actually like can be really good like they can get like bravery and they can get like honor as as skills and stuff like that. Or they can get like like I said Philly I keep going back and that's still fucked me up when I saw first but like alcoholic depression yeah like in I saw insomnia alcohol they had depression in there they had um uh one person was a masochist as a skill so he has to get hit and you only hope that's on your tank because if it's not this gonna really suck like you know he'll take hits for somebody else in your tank he could he could be about to die and your and your tank and your tank will be about to take a hit he'll jump in front of the tank.
SPEAKER_03Yeah he'll literally like places with people what game console was this on this is on phones this is on everything after a while this just started in the PC game but then went to mobile uh eventually but yeah and in the in the gene in the genius part of uh the darkest dungeon is is is close is uh it's right is related to uh kind of blood bone where insanity was a stack in darkest dungeon stress was a stack oh god no and and uh in your in your uh in in a lot of those inflictions that uh mark that uh champion braces was talking about was brought was brought upon because your stress got too high and so and it's like and it's literally is letting you know that going through all these uh and it was also love crafty and again so like going through all these terrible things left a mark on all your characters and and and like you said you ran through different characters because these motherfuckers died so like like you like you you ran the town you didn't you didn't just run the street because they they wasn't gonna last unless you really like know knew knew how to play the game but like and and like your stress if when stress went to a hundred they they had like a major infliction and they would like start to lose it that's when like they would come a masochist and start taking hits or like or they might just be uh they might just be like real uh negative and be saying like we're all gonna die here and they'll start stressing out the rest of your team by the fucked up shit they say.
SPEAKER_06Yeah they'll start saying some random shit in the middle of battles or like while you're traveling like open up a chest and then one of the candles come out and say well you know I'm thinking about killing myself or like it's a whole or they'll start attacking your other party members because they love blood or um that's the stress I can't I can't take that kind of kind of comment that's a stress I don't need I don't need that shit.
SPEAKER_03I don't need a member saying we're all gonna fucking die I'm gonna fucking with you and tell you to shut the fuck up and we need to keep going like I don't know which body is going to be used for the necrophilia if you're stressing the 200 men the game's gonna get no better any game yeah that the absolute best that that nigga is fucking I can just listen to that nigga.
SPEAKER_04Matter of fact I need to buy some of his audio books you know a big part of the game too is figuring out who's fucked up enough in the best way so you can keep those people and yeah those are like optimizing you know the fucked up traits so it's like oh everyone's gonna be fucked up in a certain way in darkest dungeon but you have to pick the ones who are the best way you know that you can work with yeah and it'll just like award you can uh you could get these you can put them in and get and like get them fixed up but that shit is expensive it's expensive and that nigga could go adventuring for a while.
SPEAKER_03So you definitely you you you had to take care of your resources and and decide who you're gonna take care of and who you about to lose.
SPEAKER_06Nope every is it's Nick's idea of every individual snowflake is special in their things with this shit.
SPEAKER_03It sounds like it continues to reaffirm it but also the fact that you're just as disposable as everyone else yeah yeah they do run that out me at that given point in time they do run that out the real character darkest dungeon was the was the was the base it was the village but I say it was it was the you had to upgrade the thing that brought in more adventurers you had to upgrade the place that got rid of the stress you had to up like you did that's that's what you managed and that's and that was what you kept throughout the game all these other niggas could come and go. Like I mean if you lost a max level character you probably kind of fucked but uh but in general though the only c the only consistent thing was the base and the in the in the in the depths of depravity that your uncle called you here was directly fucked by him I also like to point out this will be the last fucked up game that I'll point out for this kind of podcast me and comment like yeah man you do this and you do that and everybody else is like Jesus what the fuck games nigga what's wrong with you oh man's not board that out though thanks for the past thanks for get back on topic I think I think the marks of a good uh psychological game is is I think I think what like Rob brought up is when they start gaslighting you and start making you uh disbelieve uh like the facts and what you experience and um you know and like and after they get you get you to the point where uh you're not sure what's real and what's not and then uh you know and then they can like really like go to work on you and just yeah so I think uh I think I think a A has to be I think any horror game has to be really immersive like because that's that's like because my my thing like I can I can play all this shit and not care because that's not me. I I wouldn't be here I wouldn't make these decisions and whatever but if you can like actually draw me into this world and the character you know with like the music and the gameplay elements and the uh individual design and and all that and actually get me in there then it's like then then then it's kind of you you can do what you want with me.
SPEAKER_02And um that's the thing about Dead Space because Isaac went on the Ishimor thinking he was going to also save his woman find out you don't even know if she's alive. So all these you know um getting messages he was receiving messages from her but at the end you're like is she even alive because once you touch base on that ship you know the marker drives everybody crazy.
SPEAKER_06So you're like maybe she was dead this entire time I don't know if you even I think you find out in two champ uh champes is is is she dead I think she's dead I cannot remember if it was at two that you find out if she's dead or not or is like you find or you come across her and then she dies. I can't remember how that goes exactly right you can't even trust it.
SPEAKER_02You know like the doctor says that gaslighting you know you can't even um look at your character as someone who is I would say of sound mind because everything that you thought you knew in the beginning of the game is fucked. And so it's just kind of like did I even really conquer anything at all which is also that feeling of despair and that's also another element of horror you know it's just not just jump scares, but it's a feeling of loss, despair, hopelessness, you know depression obviously and um just kind of like you feel incomplete like what the fuck did I even do? Like did anything I did even help.
SPEAKER_05And I I think you're right those are just elements that make the the the the the hybridization of those things of what make horror games or just horror in general like so great. Like keeping people dazed and confused and not simply subverting their expectations but heightening their senses at the same time and it's not even so much and I kind of want to like put it back like it's not even so much that um it takes you away from like the more factual or data driven elements of one's own one's own experience. It adds to them to the extent where it it it deceives you into this illusion that what you saw may not have actually been what you really saw but it doesn't mean you didn't see it. But it makes you question yourself back and forth. And it gives you and it plays on this kind of um what's the language anticipation. There we go. I don't like that hard word was real hard to find um but it plays on like the the fact that you're anticipating something and it makes it that much more pressing when you're waiting for something that may or may not actually come but when it gets there it doesn't get there at your pace. It gets there at the pace that kind of already designated and it's like I think that's the tricky part about making horror video games especially Is that if you have people waiting for jump scares all the time, you're not making a really scary game because people are just waiting for you to try and throw something at them and make them say, oh fuck. Like, like when CG nephew like saw him come around the corner, like, what jump gears? Like you're like jump gear to that actually have gotten to the point where even someone that young hit is anticipating them or sees them to be so cheesy where they're not really effective modes of scaring people anymore. At a certain point, yeah, it worked out because culturally speaking, like there was a there was a sense of complacency with our environment where if something did just jump out and scare us, like it wouldn't make sense. But now I think I'm kind of getting somewhat meta social about this, but we've gotten to a point as a as a society, both you know, locally and globally, that we're anticipating something going awry at any time. 2020. So it jumps too much. Murder hornets, 2020 has a whole hair correct. So like if you think that if if you want a really good like scare, if you want a really good experience when it comes to horror, or something that will, you know, make stress you out in the right way, but not you know, stress you out in ways that are typical, so to speak, then you want something that'll go for that longer burn, something that'll go for those tiny, those tinier increments of inconsistencies with your like with your senses, rather than, you know, just something just leaping out in front of you or zombies running around in front of you, or like happening to five vampires or happy five werewolves. Because at the end of the day, it it's really the questioning of ourselves when we're playing these games and how we react to them and what we what our expectations are and our relationship to the rest of the world that we have to deal with outside of it and how the game is gonna affect us once we've left the game is is what is what we're really kind of dealing with when we have to immerse ourselves in something that's uh playing on our anxieties and our fears and our worries and our abilities to try and think through or around things because a horror horror game will put you in a position of where you can't even even though you have the capacity to figure life out or figure things out, you're you're confined to the to the devices in which you're given and the possibility that even those things are insufficient. So I think that's the the one of the core things about horror games is that it makes you that much more vulnerable because it they have the potential to show you that everything that you think that you have that has made you um confident in yourself or capable is just as easily thrown out of the window as like some trash out of the car window.
SPEAKER_02I think also when it plays on morals as well, I think that's what the hardest. Um I I can't remember, I can't believe I forgot about this, but The Walking Dead, I think I was on the Wii. I can't remember.
SPEAKER_05I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I forgot, but the one was like where Clem Clem Clementine is in the game.
SPEAKER_10Is it one of those like the visual ones? The epit the episodic um story. Yeah, like the like visual now.
SPEAKER_03Oh, the telltale, yeah.
SPEAKER_05The telltale, yeah. Yeah, the tell the the telltale ones are like you have to like choose stuff, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's like you know, you want to read a book, like go back to page 33 and then okay, go to page 21.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so um I I I ever since the goosebumps books when I was turned back, I would tell them I didn't go there, I didn't go there, I didn't go there. I can't do that anymore.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, no, I'm dead.
SPEAKER_02Um yeah, when it plays a uh I think if I can remember, I think that was one where um I forgot which console it was, but it was the walk, it was a part of the walking dead, and um they went to like this farmhouse and they thought they had refuge because they finally went to a place that had food, that had water, that had people there. You ended up finding out that the people were actually serving people, you know what I'm saying? So it was just kind of like this is going against like more like a moral type of thing. Like they were actually eating people. They were, you know, I'm saying, so it was just kind of like it doesn't have to be there's so many different types of horror elements. And when you think of cannibalism, that goes against the general morals, like this is fucking horrifying. Like, how could you do this? And and you're watching it, you're like, what the fuck am I eating? Like, you know, what is going on? So it's just very interesting as well on how you can play with horror in different elements. I think what makes it fresh is when we don't even think about something that could be horror and it is, especially when it's close to like how we live, you know, think of something that were happening. What if, like, you know, you're sitting in your room and then a plane just crashes right into your neighborhood? You know, oh my god, like I'm just saying for like, you know, story purposes, I hope that never happens.
SPEAKER_10I mean, I'm good, but I mean I'm going back to sleep, but okay.
SPEAKER_02But just you know, things like that. I think that is where, you know, like like uh black book quote was saying, as a society, we are just so numb, I guess, to allow things now have to see it all. We've seen, you know, the blood, we've seen the creatures, we've seen space. So what else can we see that is new? And I think it's just when you're living your life. Yeah, when it's really happening.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but I mean like seeing each other's cotton street. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01When she said cannibals, I was like, ooh, steak. Still Joe.
SPEAKER_09I'm sure I would try it.
SPEAKER_08I would try it.
SPEAKER_01Wait, what?
SPEAKER_03I wouldn't try as a uh You unlock cannibalism.
SPEAKER_05Plus three points. I'm not saying I'm just saying it's if a situation arises, if the need arises, but you know, I'm I'm not against it.
SPEAKER_10It would be day two, and we'll be eating somebody. Let's be real.
SPEAKER_03I literally have seen enough survival like trainings, videos, and video games to find food elsewhere. Yeah, before you would know when I'm eating. You can eat way too much. Calm that down. Whoa, whoa, whoa. I did not say I would stop and eat vegetables.
SPEAKER_09You you hold up, hold up. Don't you put that vegan tea on me?
SPEAKER_02I have a question for the doctor. Like, I heard that humans are not meant, oh, of course, we're not meant to eat each other, but I hear like there is actually a debilitating disease that happens if we if people do partake in cannibalism, isn't that correct?
SPEAKER_04So it's basically two things. One, whenever you eat someone else, you can transmit disease really, really effectively in ways that normally wouldn't be possible. So you would get like a neurological virus that is transmitted easily when you eat, you know, painted foods, but it's normally not found in like the parts of things you eat, unless you're eating people. So something like that, for instance. The other thing is it can just cause you to go, you know, it's similar to when you like when something challenges your immune system or something that's part of your immune system comes in, like a bad transplant or something, how uh you know it'll cause a reaction and your body attacks it and whatnot. Things similar to that can happen with you know consumption of people, you know, because it's you know, it is you know, another it's the same DNA, same structures and whatnot, but it has enough immunologic differences that it's going to cause you some problems.
SPEAKER_09So, yeah, in my medical opinion, handless this ball.
SPEAKER_02I would not recommend thank you, doctor. That's all wanted to ask.
SPEAKER_08So you can put the nail in the coffin for anything else. All right, it's got a little lemon pepper.
SPEAKER_02You know what, Joe, because look, don't want to be looking at the thick people the first, okay? And we got me, and I ain't got time to run away from Joe now. You won't be fucking getting salt and pepper on my ass, and I ain't got time to be running away.
SPEAKER_08So hell no.
SPEAKER_05And garlic, don't forget the garlic. Oh my god. Don't forget the lorries. You know, you can't forget the lorries.
SPEAKER_10I don't like Lowry. So I don't I don't do that.
