Welcome back to the Blur Inspectrum Podcast, everyone. We are here this week with a phenomenal topic. We are talking about the one and only Dr. Harleen Quinzel, other known as the Indomitable Harley Quinn. So today's a special day for one of our panelists. And the reason why we're doing this episode, not only is this like her spirit animal, but also because uh we wanted to talk about all of the recent and as well, you know, the core uh storylines and concepts for this character, it's not just about the TV show, not just about Birds of Fray, not just about uh Suicide Squad uh or the original Batman or the comic book, about everything over cross of time about Miss Harleen or sorry, Dr. Harleen Quinzel. Uh so first off, going to start with introducing our panelists, starting with myself, Suchino Shogun. Also, we have the black McCoy.
SPEAKER_04Hello, everyone.
SPEAKER_01We have Ms. Kittles.
SPEAKER_02Hello, hello.
SPEAKER_05This blank is swaddling.
SPEAKER_04What'd you say?
SPEAKER_05This blank and the skills guy is swaddling. Looking like Rihanna at the Matt Gala this year.
SPEAKER_01Oh, then we have the Sione cosplay. Hello. We have Kaze Shinryu. Hola. And we have Shampoo bracelets, including our birthday girl of the day. It is Miss Shampoo Bracelet, other known as Damo, other known as the Dr. Harley Mews.
SPEAKER_05I'm just I'm just here for her. I'm the emotional support. Stand by your woman.
SPEAKER_03There you go. Yes.
SPEAKER_01So of course, today, like we said, we're gonna just talk about uh pretty much in a conversational format. There's really no structure here. I have really nothing uh organized uh for this particular episode to be completely that is a first, right? I I normally I do some type of research and then say, oh, we can talk about this, do a bunch of questions. No, no, no. I'm just I'm really just gonna allow us to talk in general. Um, let's see, starting point, you know, she's a doctor, doctor of uh psychiatry, psych psychiatry? Yep, yeah, psychiatry. Uh went to Gotham State University. Uh her best friends are Poison Ivy, sometimes Catwoman, off and on. Um, she, of course, briefly dated the Joker. I think that's what everybody says her uh uh call to fame is. I personally think her call to fame is the fact that she can fight members of the Justice League as well as go on like almost every suicide squad mission ever and still not die.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, yeah, yeah. She is like nine lives for all.
SPEAKER_01She loved her.
SPEAKER_10Uh but uh gave her some lives or something. Interesting.
SPEAKER_01Quiet. But anyway, okay, so let's go. Panelists, what is your let's see, random question. What is your first intrigue? How did you first come across Miss Harleen Quinzel? Dr. Harleen Quinzel.
SPEAKER_05Hmm. I think most of us were first introduced to Dr. Harlene Quinzel in the 90s on Batman the Animated Series with the rest of the world. Not the rest of the world.
SPEAKER_10I would agree. I would agree. When she came on scene, that's when I that was why I introduced her. Hey, hey, this little little joker looking little you know thing. I was like, oh, she's cute.
SPEAKER_03I was like, who's this little acrobatic chick? Yeah, I like it.
SPEAKER_11Sorry about that, sorry about that. Yes, I was introduced to uh Miss Harleen, uh definitely in Batman the Animated Series, and I like the look of her. She was just had this sleek, kind of like gothic noir. Well, all of the Batman um anime series did, but I loved her her kind of like uh jester outfit, and it was just so cute and retro. And I definitely was captivated uh by her, especially the black lipstick. She was the only I would say cartoon character that rocked black lipstick that I could remember, and I thought that was very interesting and different. So I definitely was rocking her style.
SPEAKER_05Kaiser? And she wore it well.
unknownMr.
SPEAKER_05Shinneryu. Oh, he said same.
SPEAKER_08Ah, that's all you said.
SPEAKER_03Sorry, missed it. Completely missed it.
SPEAKER_05But I think uh her run in uh the Batman the Animated Series was it was like a great introduction for her. And I think I was I think it was I was more glad to because you know I'm not a huge comic reader, but I was glad to know that that being her her canon introduction and seeing like seeing how great the response was towards her character, um, took the like was influenced literally every writer and every writer afterwards to explore her character so much more outside of just being like this right-hand woman to the Joker. And it it was it's I it she just became so much more fun of a character after that. And it was like we always knew that she was quote unquote like a bad guy, so to speak. But like the more they dove into her, it was like the more we learn that, you know, she I think she represents or she was not let me not say represents, but she like serves as like this kind of uh this totem for like a lot of the amazing things that the I'll say specifically Gotham City kind of represents or is supposed to represent because she's like a renowned and brilliant psychologist, psychiatrist, um, to have even made her way to get in front of the Joker to be like the one to do this therapy. Um, and on top of being in like the I because I didn't read the comics, of course, I watched the Harley Quinn uh show, uh the DC animated show, which is absolutely fucking phenomenal. Didn't know I needed that show. Um, exploring her own personal trauma as well as like her own understanding of herself even more to influence what to show why she found herself in the place that she did when it came to the Joker, um, is like the work that we expect to see or would like to see when it comes to a lot of the other villains in the DC universe, especially particularly in Gotham, because like we see these villains get put in Arkham Asylum, of course, you know, as a it's a mental institution. And so the the the idea is that all of them have mental pro some sort of mental health problem or some sort of like mental health, you know, issue that they're dealing with. And I think Harley has been really the only like solid character we've got to see um a lot of that background in, at least in the on the animated front. Because I'm sure it's probably it's probably happened to some degree in the comics, but we haven't really had the opportunity to see that um in a more mainstream animated way.
SPEAKER_10Well, lucky for you, Black McCoy. Um, you know, Harley, we saw her first on the animated series. She wasn't even in the comic book yet. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, I mean, after that run in the animated series, like they started putting her in comics and you know, giving her that that run that she was supposed to have. But even in the original Batman the Animated Series, like seeing her interact with Batman and Batman being like, bitch, you too smart for this. What's up for you? I've re I've I I've personally read your research. Why are you why are you how did you get here? Like, what is the problem? Why what what happened?
SPEAKER_08Fucking love, right?
SPEAKER_10Uh crazy shit, some crazy shit. That that that um that empathy and sympathy aspect of like um like I I guess like being a psychologist, like having to separate, having to separate what you're doing for work from your personal feelings.
SPEAKER_08And clearly she wasn't able to do that with a joker, or or that man is just that manipulative, but probably both.
SPEAKER_10Do I want to give him that much credit at all?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's also true. I I know this is the Batman. I would give Batman some of that credit only because he is he's Batman for a reason. Like he may not be the strongest, but he is definitely the most intelligent. So as far as the Justice League is concerned.
SPEAKER_01Oh, uh, there's some people that say they're smarter, but I'm not going there today. Um, but yeah, no, no. Definitely with with Harley, she, I mean, one of the one of her, like not claim again, one of the things that they say is a part of her abilities, um, is the, you know, one, the fact that she uh because she is a doctor of psychiatry, she, you know, has she has the ability to like psychoanalyze certain scenarios, situations, individuals. So it's interesting when you know when you know about it now, but then you think about it in the past, like all the situations she found herself in, she was able to get out of them. And in my mind, I'm like, how hasn't she died? But she is a psychoanalytic individual and she's also has genius level uh uh intellect. So it's like she's able to know when it's time to fuck to leave, she knows when it's time to fuck the fight, and she knows who the fuck to interact with. So, you know, because I don't even think has Harley ever been locked up in Arkham, other than she was the Joker, but was she arrested?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, she's been arrested plenty of times. Did she escape or did what she released? She's had some times where she's escaped, she's had some times where she was like retrieved by, of course, Amanda Waller, and she's had some times where the Joker has broken her out. But yeah, I mean it's it's amazing.
SPEAKER_10Even on the animated series, like she got out of a whole volcano like prison.
SPEAKER_05Oh, Bell Rabbit, was it Bel Rabb?
SPEAKER_10Yeah, um, for season two, her and I we remember they escaped because Bane was the warden of the prison, and it was deep down in this dark, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. In the animated show, and they still ended up getting out.
SPEAKER_06Kaze, what we say? Uh no, I said I said, yeah, she wouldn't, she would have never been in Suicide Squad if they ain't catcher.
SPEAKER_01No, no, I I know. I was I was more so asking the I knew the answer to my question. I was asking it so we had something to talk about. I I wasn't trying to I mean that's how she met, you know, together now they know. Yeah. Um uh also, you know, she she actually went to Gotham State University on a scholarship for gymnastics. So her ability to be that flexible, to be that to I mean, how did she does anybody know how she learned like martial arts in hand-to-hand combat? Was that like her growing up or um I don't know?
SPEAKER_05Um, I know I think I know that a lot of her combat ability just comes from her one psychosis as well as her gymnastic ability. Like her gymnastic ability allows her to be agile and nimble in a number of situations. But I think I think the part of the most mysterious part about Harley for me that I should probably look up is like how she in how she reached this particular like psychological decline into this psychosis that she has. Because she it's we think the most interesting thing about her for me is that the psychosis is there and she's extremely aware that it's there. Um she managed she seemingly manages it very, very well. Um, but on top of that, she is still able to be um a psychoanalyst, like she is still top tier to the point where even in the animated in her animated Harley Quinn series, like she has had moments where she has had full-on conversations with herself, like telling like telling herself to get her shit together. Like, bitch, what is wrong with you?
SPEAKER_01Like that doesn't bother me one bit. I was I was told when I was young, if you're the as long as you're talking to the smartest person in the room, it doesn't matter that you're talking to yourself.
SPEAKER_05No, no, no, but it was, it was, but it wasn't even just that. It was that like she would have in the same way we see like the kind of delusions and uh visions or like stuff that we see like in the the Suicide Squad movie or in like that we saw in Birds of Prey, like she she consistently has that kind of stuff um happen all the time. And I remember I forget which Arkham game it was. I don't know if it was Arkham City or if it was like Arkham Knight, but you there was like a side like DLC where you could play as Harley Quinn. Um it was Arkham Knights. Was it Arkham Knights? Yeah, and like when you would in the same way that Batman would go into like just not like a rage mode, but like a kind of like a frenzy mode of being able to like be hyperware, move, and like you know, beat the shit out of everybody. Harley Quinn had a similar mode where it was just like her psychosis, like she was like she would go so she would go so far off the edge that she would be unstoppable. It'd be like a she would turn into a literal berserker. And it's interesting to see a character like her who as who is as intelligent as she is, but simultaneously have this like rage in that's like constantly able to be like unleashed in this Hulk style fashion if she goes too far. So I think that's part of where her fighting ability comes from. Um, yeah, I think that's part of where her fighting ability comes from, is her psychosis. But I don't know if she's had like any specific martial arts training. I know, of course, in some timelines she's not been with Batman. He might have given her some training or whatever, right?
SPEAKER_01But um I mean, they say her gymnastics and her hand-to-hand combat like rivals both uh Catwoman and Nightwing.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06I remember she's just uh one, she's a natural, and and two, she's a killer. Like a lot, a lot, a lot of a lot, a lot of you know, you especially you fighting like good guys and niggas who don't know what they're doing, you know, she doesn't hesitate. Uh, like you said, she's a psychoanalyst, she reads the situation, she does what she needs to do. True, and uh, yeah, and a lot of fighting is this, you know, putting putting putting putting what you need to be in the right place at the right time. And you know, and she she don't stop to think about nothing. She does, she just does it and she can do it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. And that's how she slept with nightwing that one time. Wow.
SPEAKER_09I was wondering who was gonna drop that bomb.
SPEAKER_01I knew it was gonna be uh, I thought it was gonna be Kaze, but you know.
SPEAKER_09Between Kaze and Shami P over here, one of the two.
SPEAKER_05Okay, because I remember he was scared at first because he was like, uh, and then next thing you know, he wasn't untied anymore. Then he was like, I mean, got to see it through, my boy.
SPEAKER_07The only reason why he was scared is he was afraid of how daddy Batman was gonna look at him.
SPEAKER_04Yo, and when Batman found out, oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Hilarious.
SPEAKER_10I mean, Harley's a bad bitch. I don't know, I don't know. Okay, I I've never seen an iteration where she's not like I'm I'm ready to see where this poison ivy relationship goes because they like passed out and fell up and woke up next to each other about three times, and they were like, oh my god.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah, like even comic-wise, she and she and she and Ivy have a really great relationship. I think that's the best thing about not the best thing about Harleen, but like the best thing about her uh relationships that she's former people. One, queer as fuck. Woo! Two, um, like just the way that she was she had a much healthier relationship with um Poison Ivy.
SPEAKER_10She saved her life, yeah. After after her whole uh boyfriend tried to kill her multiple times, she saved her life. Um kept telling her she wasn't shit. Yep. Right, right. Like, stop stop dealing with this dude, dog. Like, um I'm I'm pretty sure like Ivy, I I'm trying to remember, but I though I wanted to say the one of the first times that Ivy saved her life. She um she gave her some type of like some type of serum. Some you know, you know, she she'd be dealing with the plants or whatever. So she gave her something that made her like more immune to like poisons and things like that.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, that was uh during what new was that new earth?
SPEAKER_05New was that new 52? No, no, no.
SPEAKER_10Uh don't don't don't even ask me no numbers because you're not gonna be cause that's a y'all question.
SPEAKER_05I don't it was the poison ivy serum, I think it was during new earth.
SPEAKER_07That's a cause question because when it comes to that new 52 shit, I started cutting out.
SPEAKER_01They would they would I think it was New Earth, I don't think it was New 52. But anyway, what was the question? Oh, when when did uh Poison Ivy uh give uh up when did Poison Ivy give Harley Quinn the serum to give her like superhuman abilities on top of what she already had?
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01Oh oh yeah, I'm not sure, but that that's definitely relatively recent now. Continue, Miss Kittles.
SPEAKER_10No, that was all I was just saying, like that, like that friendship right there, like like she's like literally like bestie. Um, I mean, if it grows and you know, it's something else.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm not gonna remember. They definitely bumped quits a couple times.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, and the end of the series they ran off together because she decided not to marry Kite Man, but um, which was a total joke.
SPEAKER_05Um, but yeah, so I think she cared about Kite, well, she cared about Kite Man.
SPEAKER_10He was not a villain.
SPEAKER_05I I didn't say he was a villain, I said she cared about him.
SPEAKER_10I don't think she cared about him as much as she cared about Harley. She couldn't tell him not as well. Absolutely not.
SPEAKER_05She um she had feelings for Harley from Jump.
SPEAKER_10Oh, yeah, definitely. But I'm curious to see where where it goes because I think Shammy said they don't explore that in like depth in the comic book, I think. They're like touching no bottom, like yeah, they're like they like breeze over top of it, but they don't give it the meat and potatoes that it needs, so you can flush out the story a little bit.
SPEAKER_06So I mean a lot of a lot of comics they'll uh like you you don't ever get like, oh, this is the beginning of their relationship, but a lot of times like they have the like the bullshit slice of life, like, oh will they won't they? Will they won't they? And then the other ones they'll just they just act like they they in a relationship already. Um so yeah, it just it just depends on who uh who who writes.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I got a question for y'all.
SPEAKER_08What is say I have a question too?
SPEAKER_05You go first then.
SPEAKER_08Who me?
SPEAKER_05Oh wow, wow.
SPEAKER_10Do y'all do y'all really consider Harley a villain?
SPEAKER_05No, I see her more as an anti-hero. Yeah, yes, yeah, she she's straight anti-hero because she she's one of those characters who does what she wants when it suits her needs, or when she feels like fuck, I should probably do something about this. Because like even in Suicide Squad, she's like it, she she became this character, even in like the the the live action suicide squad movies, like she became this character of like, I mean, you know, uh I gotta do this because it's the right thing to do. I might still kill people in the process, but you know, uh, you're like when she killed old dude um the president, the guy with the birds, yeah. Yeah, when she killed the dude with the birds in the suicide squad, uh or in James Gunn's Suicide Squad, it was like she was like, you know what, you're really sweet, you're really nice, but I I I've I I've been with men like you before. I know I know exactly what kind of man you you are, what kind of man you're gonna become, things you're capable of. And I just can't let myself fall into that again. I can't, you know, let you stick around because it's gonna be bad for everybody. And so, you know, but I'm gonna have to bust a cap in your ass. Like self-awareness. Right.
SPEAKER_10After I get this nut. So by the time I do this, you won't have any of this.
SPEAKER_08That shit was so wonderful. I was like, yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_09Self-awareness is like amazing.
SPEAKER_05That's the that's I think that's the that's one of the things that I personally identify with Harley Quinn the most, is that there is this like persistent feeling, transparency moment. There's this like persistent feeling of like something like really wild happening internally inside my mind, but being acutely aware of it also like makes it a very interesting experience. I mean, I don't have like a degree of psychosis or anything when I'm having hallucinations and shit. Laura, I hope not, I hope all this is real, but um nonetheless, nonetheless, like being super aware of oneself, even in spite of or alongside like the the level of you know, like dissonance from actual reality that's going on there is really, really personally identifiable.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, what was your question?
SPEAKER_05Oh, my question was what was y'all's what has been y'all's favorite Harley Quinn moment that you've seen so far?
SPEAKER_10That's a good question. That is a good question.
SPEAKER_05I have my answer. So uh to kind of jump it up. Like so, my favorite Harley Quinn moment that I have seen thus far, it was a it was a comic strip or it was a section from a comic where she and Black Canary were fighting, but Black Canary was pregnant and she was having morning sickness. And so they had to literally stop fighting because Black Canary was like was like about to barf. And she handed her a trash can and it just sat there. They did she handed her a trash can and she sat there and talked, and she was like, I remember what I remember what that was like. And so it was like it was this really intimate moment that. They had where it was like we're on opposite sides of an issue, but um I'm still I empathize with you enough with what you're going through to recognize that hey, that that's more important than whatever the fuck we're dealing with. Because um, because it was Harley was pregnant with the Joker's child. Is that justice? I think so. I can't remember exactly. I think the design to sit down on my mind is when she had her pigtail. She had like twins. Yeah, she had kids, she had like kids and she she hid them away with somebody. She like gave them up so the joker would never find them because she knew that if the joker, because she was basically she's basically told um canary that she knew that if the Joker would ever find these kids, that it would be terrible for them. So she she gave up the children after you know she gave birth to them. Um, and so that was their like bonding moment of like over motherhood that you know Canary was able to not only continue to be black canary, but at the same time have to deal with being a pregnant mom and her like looking at it like shit. Like, uh, look at what is happening in this moment, look at what you're going through. And I because I've been there and I don't even have the opportunity to be the mother that you plan on being after all of this because of my particular circumstances is like, you know, let me be here for you instead of antagonizing you in this way. So that was my favorite Harley Quinn moment.
SPEAKER_03That's justice.
SPEAKER_09It wasn't justice, the movie that we're slowly waiting for to come out.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah, the animated trailer. Whoo!
SPEAKER_09Yeah, look at that shit.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_10Um, I think my favorite Harley moment has been actually the Harley Quinn series, just to see her like rise from the ashes to get away from Joker. Because again, I'm not a comic book reader, but to see her separate herself from Joker and have the determination and drive to be like, nah, I'm gonna shit on you. I'm gonna become a member of the Legion of Doom and I'm gonna do it my way. Um, I think that was my favorite moment. And then with especially with they give you the flashes of her before she became Harley Quinn talking to herself, saying, You can do this. Let me let me replay the story to see how it really happened. You made the decision, he didn't push it. Um, so I think that first season was my favorite moments for me seeing her. I'm still behind on the season, but I don't I don't know if I have a favorite moment.
SPEAKER_08Like all of these like little flashes of her face keep popping out at me.
SPEAKER_10Different in different, like just in different things that she's been in and things that I've seen. I just I don't know if I can choose, honestly.
SPEAKER_06Um it's hard for me to pick two, but uh a funny one is uh Holly was uh Holly was talking to Green Arrow. They were like, they was like they had just got finished fighting somebody together, and he was like, he's like, yeah, we're gonna have to uh head back to the arrow cave and uh you know recoup. And she was like, the the the arrow cave? Did you did Bruce pick first and you just you know he was like he was like yo, I said yo, I save lives for a living. Like, why are you worried about the day with his case? And she was like, but like, but like the the quipper like names it it does it names itself, like why it's so easy.
SPEAKER_05And I remember he was like, damn, that's good.
SPEAKER_06He's like, he's like, damn, damn, this is uh this is a uh career failure here. But as far as I know, it's still called the uh the arrow cave. So you know, got got to see it through, my boy.
SPEAKER_01Uh my favorite Harle Quinn moment, actually, I I am also waiting for the Injustice movie, but my favorite is when I got to play her in Injustice to the game. Uh, her in the story mode. I I I thought it was probably, I mean, granted, there's been many times that the Joker has died or left her hanging, um, literally. Um, but in this particular moment, it was when um it was after after Superman killed Joker and Superman was in jail after Injustice One, and then Injustice Two, she kind of like was the ally of Batman and everybody else. So she was like, like you said, the anti-hero, but still more of a hero than anti-hero at that moment. And it was kind of like she was fighting through the struggles of like seeing the Joker everywhere, and then even during the training, when you're learning how to play with her, she's like fighting against like a like a psychosis um created version of the Joker. And like it's just this moment of like, I'm me, uh, I'm not you, and I don't need you. And oh, come on, put in no, yes, I'll never have another Mr. J. And then she fucked him up.
SPEAKER_00It was amazing.
SPEAKER_01Um, and it it just it was it was good to see um them trying to give her a moment to be herself and not be associated or connected to him. And every time I see that, either in Birds of Prey or in uh uh uh Suicide Squad or whatever happens in the future, or even in the animated series, anytime they she specifically learns that she can be on her own. I guess I have to watch the Harley Quinn show, haven't seen it yet. Um, but anytime that she gets to be on her own and separate herself from the Joker, it always shows, even though she's still, you know, not all the way there, but it still shows that um she can do it on her own, and she has the potential to be not only batshit crazy, but like one of the baddest bitches in DC. So I think it's amazing. Well, I was doing a little digging because, like I said, I didn't do any uh uh pre uh pre pre prep prep for this uh episode, uh, but I was doing a little digging and I actually found out how Harley Quinn was created. Yes, she was she first debuted in the Batman the Animated Series, uh, and she was drawn, uh or who's been uh noted or credited as the creator, uh, is uh writer Paul Denny. But actually, the person who really, according to Paul Denny, who came up with um Harley Quinn was the voice actor Arlene Sorkin. So that's kind of how you see Arlene is in Harlene Quinzel. So she was an actress um on Days of Our Lives back in 1987. And in in one of her like cut in one of her stories, they had her dress up as a Harlequin in roller skates and like she was like bonkers in a dream sequence. And like he sent she sent him a VHS when he asked her to, you know, voice a character he was coming up with, and she sent him the tape, and that's how she was born. And he kind of like took that and turned it into Harley Quinn. So that's why it's like Harlene Quinzel is Arlene Sorten.
SPEAKER_08Oh, that's not that's cool. I didn't know that. Interesting.
SPEAKER_01So uh okay, so we have our favorite moments. We have uh what makes Harley Harley? Oh, did we ask that question?
SPEAKER_09Well, we kind of we answered it, but okay.
SPEAKER_01Well then for you, birthday girl, what makes he why why Harley Quinn? Because like not only is Harley Quinn your favorite character, but far Harley Quinn is the uh kind of the core of a lot of your designs and your concepts and your logos and your uh motifs. Why Harley Quinn? What what about Harley Quinn uh has impressed herself upon you?
SPEAKER_10Um that's a good question. Um I think her ability to it's almost like she has an on and off switch sometimes where she can be talking to you one minute and then go completely ape shit another, like and you weren't expecting it. Like when we were talking about well, Black McCoy was talking about the game. I actually played that version when Mark got it, just to play the Harley Quinn version because I didn't give a fuck about the rest of the game. Um so you know, in my adolescent years, that's kind of how my emotions were, that went to school with me. Um she was just that character that I was able to identify with quickly outside of uh, you know, emotional trauma from Joker. Um yeah, and then black and red color. She wasn't one of those bright poppy like superheroes, but then she wasn't a villain that I just didn't connect with either. Like I like poison ivy as well, but I don't some something about Harley always just stuck in my mind.
SPEAKER_01Phenomenal. More phenomenal.
SPEAKER_10You will see a lot of red and black either around the house in the car now. Oh, um but yeah, because cars right, you know.
SPEAKER_05I mean, I'm really just waiting on the day where the car just gets that full Harleen Quinzel makeover, like regardless of whether it's the you know, the red and blue, or maybe like the red and black, probably gonna be the red and black. Probably have like some nice little the diamonds, the nice little the little diamonds on the glue.
SPEAKER_10On the Subaru that we had, and then I couldn't I couldn't take it off. I I wasn't a fan of the red and blue, just gonna be honest. I I'm I'm that classic. I need the red and black, Harley Quinn. I agree, I agree. Like I that red and blue disturbs my soul. Because when you do it did it on like the live action with the with the blonde hair, it came out too pinkish to me. So now it looks like she was wearing pink and blue, and I'm like, that's not staying true to her.
SPEAKER_01Well, also, your bias is that you hate pink, so let's also think that a buck.
SPEAKER_08That's too. But I also think that we're here, we're here with that.
SPEAKER_05I think there's some degree of merit to that, only not just because you know, the particular hate of pink. Um, I thoroughly enjoy pink, but um, I think some of the problems with that original kind of movie uh rendition of her is that her aesthetic looked far too like bubblegum pop. Like it wasn't the I don't, I'm not saying it needed to be dark and gritty, like you know, the Jesus universe is known to be or whatever. It needed to be like it the it took it's something was lost in making her look more like bubblegum pop-ish. And like to be perfectly honest, she her design was much more geared towards male consumption rather than like actual uh representation of the character itself. Like they put her in basically like a a Letterman, uh a shiny Letterman jacket and some booty shorts and some fish nets. Like, I don't think any woman would have gone out of her way to design Harley Quinn that way.
SPEAKER_10Um, I think that's why Margot Robbie had more control over her costume design in this latest Suicide Squad. Because I think when I think Mark was watching a YouTube video, or we heard something about it, how she just thoroughly hated that costume in the first suicide squad. Like thoroughly hated it because of what you just said. It was literally to make her eye candy and nothing else. You didn't embody the essence of Harley Quinn, like she is her own individual. You have her separated from Joker for most of the movie anyway, so at least allow her to be her own. Right. I mean, I watched I watched this video a while back about like well, it wasn't that far back, but yeah, it was like the evolution of Har Harley Quinn, and it just it just basically goes over like her outfits over the years, and and you're right, it wasn't until uh the live action Suicide Squad that I mean she had all she had a few outfits, like in between, you know, some animated series where she was, you know, a little revealing, right? But nothing compared to like the Suicide Squad where she's basically like the booty shorts, and that's also like pretty much when the blue was introduced, yeah. Because she always always been black and red.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, uh so yeah. I think every time I've seen her, she's always had the black and red. And I have seen, I know what you're talking about. Well, I know some of the ones you're talking about where like she was a little bit more revealing, but she still had the face paint on. Yes. So it would be like neck up, Harley Quinn, and then she might have had like a uh a bra or two top or sports bra and then something else. But I'm like, that's still you can't, you know, you don't see her face, she's still covering up. And like, other than that, she was wearing the bodysuit. So to have it, I agree, to have it go from what we're used to, and even when she was doing that, it seemed like she was putting on a costume to mimic somebody else.
SPEAKER_05So it wasn't like she's changing because you remember, even in like the second Arkham game when Joker was like in like dying because of the um venom, the yeah, because of the venom serum from the first game, like she had on like a nurse style outfit, but it was still wearing a Charlie Quinn. And like she was like her, you're right, like a lot of her other costumes outside of her classic look, or like some iteration of her classic look, right? Have just been parodies of other things. Yep. But yeah, like um Miss Skittles was saying, like the Suicide Squad was the first time we got this like complete rendition of it in a way that was like not anywhere near the original costume that we had for her. And what so when the y'all remember when like the first Suicide Squad movie came out and they showed what Harley Quinn looked like, and there are like a bunch of there are a bunch of like male cosplayers who like, oh now we're gonna see a bunch of Harley Quinn cosplays everywhere. And it was the the annoying part was like, in my, I'll say, in my personal opinion, the majority of the people or the majority of the males who had this kind of like uh perspective of like, oh, now we're gonna see all these Harley Quinn booty short cosplays they were, were the same ones consuming that same like aesthetic. And it was like, you all realize that the way that she was designed was specifically for your gaze, right? It was for you to look at rather than for the rather than for women cosplayers to have another character that they can cosplay. It's not not isn't even isn't even to say that women cosplayers haven't been um astronomically creative in the ways that Harm Clinton has been like represented throughout cosplay cosplay spaces, but just this mainstream one that caused so much like vitriol from a certain part of the community that it was it was simultaneously amusing and like disgusting to see at the same time. It's like it it on on a certain level, it's not that big of a deal because it's like I don't because I because in my personal opinion, male cosplayers have spent more time cosplaying Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, and uh Goku, Naruto, and pretty much every other male character for like the past at least 20 to 30 years. And the moment when a uh a woman character like Harley Quinn gets this more kind of like mainstream representation and people, particularly women, consume it and it blows up in the way that all these other like consistent male characters that we've had for literal decades has, then it all of a sudden becomes a problem. So I regardless of my issues with her costume in that regard in the first Suicide Squad movie, the one thing that I can say is that the petty part of me thoroughly appreciates the um the the the like the upset that she caused for people who were upset about her having that kind of having the representation that she had. It was far from perfect, um, or even far from what was what women would need or would want to be represented in themselves. Because like if you look at Birds of Prey, like her her costumes looked so much better in that movie because it was that movie was written, that movie was directed. I don't remember if it was written, probably was written by women. Like that, like yeah, it was it was it was a whole it was a whole team of women, and you saw you saw the notable differences between that movie between the between Suicide Squad and between the Suicide Squad made by James Gunn. And like luckily, I can say that the James Gunn film did not mimic the same mistakes with Harley Quinn that were shown in the first Suicide Squad movie, so I can thoroughly appreciate it for that. But the best representation of her cinema cinematically has to be Birds of Prey. And I know a lot of people like thought it was terrible or thought that it was, you know, it didn't do that well. It was released during the pandemic. What the fuck did you think was gonna happen? But like, yeah, no, it like it was a really good movie, and her her storyline throughout was amazing.
SPEAKER_01Yep. I still don't see why people didn't like it, but I honestly I didn't even know people didn't like the first the the first Suicide Squad. Oh yeah, no, I I hated it. I hated Enchantress, but I didn't know people really didn't like it until after Birds of Prey came out. I was like, oh yeah, oh oh are we all oh we all are not supposed to like it? Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_08When I first watched that, I was like, I said, DC, what y'all doing?
SPEAKER_01I mean, I I was like, oh, this is this is better than Justice League. And everybody was like, No, we don't like it. What?
SPEAKER_05Oh I will say this, it was better than Justice League because I actually liked looking at the screen when things were happening. Like, if I just like if I ever had to say, like, you know what, I'm going to go ahead and determine that this movie has nothing else, nothing to truly offer me, like uh plot-wise or character-wise, and I'm just gonna look at the explosions and the flashy colors.
SPEAKER_06No, no, no, Batflack.
SPEAKER_10No, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_06Uh I I wanted to be angry at Batflack, but he but he's the but he's the best fighting Batman we've had because they they were fighting, these niggas how to fight. That's me. But some ad for but but my issues with the suicide squad was they had uh Amanda get the job done waller, yeah, create her own problem and fail to fix it, and that's not what she does. That's true, yeah. Like, like she mishandled enchantress completely and and ruined everything.
SPEAKER_05It's kind of like not my waller, not my waller, not my man, the wall, not my waller.
SPEAKER_01I love I love how we've been talking about the majority of Harley Quinn and Kaze comes in every now and then. Soon as we brought up to turn the camera on, probably opened up a bond and a book already to tell us about Mama Man the Walla, who will not be misrepresented because representation matters.
SPEAKER_10You know what NA does, okay?
SPEAKER_05I'm not about to take the Viola Davis and do that shit to her.
SPEAKER_10Thank you. You will not have my Lord Davis, the strong old woman herself, be fucking up in the movie.
SPEAKER_06I ain't never seen someone kill such a terrible role before. It was just like, damn, she's good, and damn this is bad. Like everybody's so weird.
SPEAKER_10Like, what type of shit is that? Like, okay, but yeah, and then uh Shammy B disgustingly, he hated that joker. Like, as many jokers as that we could not, we should have to be a good thing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Jared Leo, you know.
SPEAKER_10What was so sad is like I barely remembered man's being in the movie. Like it was, it was, it was literally like I watched it and didn't see him at all.
SPEAKER_08And then later on, was like when everybody kept, you know, saying, Oh, you know, which joke is your favorite? And he kept popping up. I was like, who's the where was he going? What's he in the like I'm over here like was he in the CW joke? Or like, yo, he was in the he was in there for like you know, like seconds.
SPEAKER_01Wow, he was in there for like 20 minutes.
SPEAKER_10He was at the beginning at the beginning. I know like they had a whole scene in suicide, so I remember because they because because they was at the club and then calm and died in the city. And then they they hopped in the Lambo, yeah.
SPEAKER_01He was like laying in between the knives and the bottles and that shit.
SPEAKER_05But like all of those Joker scenes could have been absolutely left out because they didn't really provide anything, they didn't provide anything exactly.
SPEAKER_08That's not I'm not personally.
SPEAKER_05Even if I were to make the argument for that joker being sorry to interrupt you, I know you're I interrupted you.
SPEAKER_04Go ahead.
SPEAKER_10He was at the end. I remember him at the end, though.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he was at the end. You're right. Like the only argument that I can make for Jared Leto's Joker being in that movie the way that he was was to continue to um underpin this idea that somehow Harley Quinn is not a character for herself, and that's me like literally trying to give so many benefits of the doubt.
SPEAKER_10You trying to stretch out that back muscle back then.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow. So we can make a Harley Quinn and Joker movie. Because but we left them all out because we we talked to a focus group and they were like, we want it should be about the Suicide Squad, not the Joker and Harley Quinn movie. But then after the movie came out, everybody was so like what y'all are saying about Jared Leto's performance that they just said, well, scrap it. Let's just do a Harley Quinn.
SPEAKER_08Right.
SPEAKER_05Like, what like I mean, honestly, they that focus group was absolutely right. Like, it wasn't a Joker and Harley Quinn movie, it was a suicide squad movie. And the fact that they had so many Joker and Harley scenes to begin with was the problem. And the fact that they when they took them out, they had the product that they did was not the fault of Jared Leto, not the fault of um the people who put the film together.
SPEAKER_09And that they were trying to play on that relationship too much.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, they were trying to play on it too much. And I guess I I want I want to think that it was too set up for birds of prey in some way, shape, or I I want to think that. I want to. I don't think it was.
SPEAKER_01That was my thought. I thought I thought they were trying to showcase in either a lot of time or a short amount of time the reason why Harley is going to be Harley during the suicide squad is because she's leaving the Joker, and this was her inspiration behind doing so. At least that's that's the only thing I can give it. Is maybe that was the reason why they felt like they had to build this backstory, like we don't know who the Joker and Harley are. And because we don't, you have to know who they are, why they're together, and now that they're apart, why this is her new focus going into this direction with the suicide squad. That's the only thing I can think of.
SPEAKER_03It was a YouTuber that didn't.
SPEAKER_06I didn't even mind the uh the fact that they put Joker in there for as long as he did. The because honestly, it wasn't it was Harley's Suicide Squad, it was really the the Harlan Deadshot show. Ooh. So in going with with that and all the and all the scenes they was in, it wasn't even the fact that Joker had all that time on screen, it's the fact that he didn't come back. Like it didn't, he didn't do they they they set they like set shit up and then and then Harley, and then Harley was supposed to grow as a character throughout throughout the movie, and then they supposed to revisit that, and they never it was just throwing hints out there because remember she had that random ass flashback and you saw these two baby onesies, and I'm like, what the fuck is that me?
SPEAKER_10Like you just can't be doing this shit out of it like this. Like it was it was a YouTuber that like literally took, he said it took him three years to watch that movie, right? And so like he finally reviewed it, and it was one of those realizations where you didn't know that movie was shit until you listened to somebody else talk about it, you goddamn that movie trash, like literally, like breaking down.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I definitely knew I knew I knew while I was sitting there shit.
SPEAKER_10That the fact that I blacked out a whole lot of things.
SPEAKER_01I'm about to say you don't remember anything of the movie. He was in there for the dream, like all she remembers is him in the aftercredits. I'm like, oh no.
SPEAKER_10I remember him at the end, like and that's what I keep saying. He was literally in there for a couple seconds, y'all. Like, with like y'all literally had a couple scenes. He had quite a few scenes. They did the whole how Harley met the Joker.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they did that too in the band and everything.
SPEAKER_10I think I remember that.
SPEAKER_04Do you remember when he like pushed around the thing off the helicopter or whatever?
SPEAKER_10That's yeah, that was in the beginning.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_07He had that shitty ass laugh scene in the middle of the movie where he stood in the middle of the room with Nazi. This was terrible. That was another thing.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm nigga. He started using the food and the barley coin and the hats from the not the Joker, Jared Leo's joke.
SPEAKER_08I gotta go back and watch it because I feel like uh missed a whole lot of shit. Just YouTube.
SPEAKER_05Basically, you didn't miss a name thing. You ain't missed a motherfucking thing. Yeah, you really just go watch a compilation video on YouTube.
SPEAKER_10Don't even watch it, it'll be a lot quicker. Yes.
SPEAKER_07Uh you try to revisit the Joker from the uh Batman BR cartoon. It ain't worth it. Not it's not the same joker. Don't do that. It's not no, it's it is it's not as good as the joker Batman BR. That's just and that's and that's specifically the Joker gang. Not even the Joker gang, the one that was okay.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, they did a better job at being the Joker.
SPEAKER_07I was about to say the case.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, one of the less popular cartoons had a more gangster joker. That's and that's what I felt like he was going.
SPEAKER_05Like even the Batman, that show, I thought it was gonna be trash, but that Joker, I love that Joker. But I but kind of wrapping back to Harley Quinn, um, I think regardless of how bad the the first Suicide Move Squad movie was, um, I think that between the Suicide Squad movie, the both Suicide Squad movies and Birds of Prey, she has had some of the best character development that we have seen in the DCEU to this day. Like, and I I largely attribute it to Birds of Prey. Like we saw where she started off as a character in Suicide Squad, terrible movie, but you know, we saw where she was nonetheless. And Birds of Prey gave us an entire arc with respect to her. Like one of the most iconic moments near the beginning of when she threw away that old costume from the first movie. Phenomenal.
SPEAKER_01Like because Marco Roby said this needs to be in the movie, but we need to know this ain't coming back, right?
SPEAKER_05And then you know, we see her, you know, get her whole. I said Marco.
SPEAKER_01I'm sorry, it's Margot. My apologies. What'd you say? I said Marco Robies. Margot Roby.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, I was like, what?
SPEAKER_01I was like, that was a very strong C. I apologize for useless. Strong C. Um, wow.
SPEAKER_05What was I saying? Sorry, I had a flashback. Um don't be sorry.
SPEAKER_01You were talking about her performance, her arc and her growth in uh Birds of Prey.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Growth. Um pineapple. Um, so in Birds of Prey, no, but just like watching her entire character art, especially watching her evolve into herself by trying to literally live on her own and be on her own and have to deal with the social backlash of all the shit that she got away with because she was quote unquote the Joker's girlfriend. Yes. And then having to survive all of that and seeing how capable she was, regardless of whether the Joker was around or not, was absolutely amazing. Because, like it, I think, because simultaneously, the world within the movie, as well as a lot of the audience who, you know, outside of the film, um had that had a lot of that same mentality that Harley Quinn or Har Harleen Quinzel is nothing without the Joker. And even in the animated show, she has to deal with a lot of that similar backlash, that she is nothing. She is no one without her relationship to the Joker. And I'm sure between her comic run, between the run in the movie, and between the um animated series that she has, that is one of, and not even and to get a bit more meta about it, that external relationship, audience members and like DC, like folks who consume DC content have had with her on a very large scale, not saying everyone, of course, have they have that relationship. She has to share in that same kind of uh critical like eye or like that disdain that people will have for her, like, oh, you don't mean anything anymore because you're no longer with the Joker. So whoever you are, whoever you think you are, doesn't matter because the Joker is always going to be better than you or be more interesting than you. And so you don't have a place to stand on your own. And it was like the shows, like I think I because I haven't read the comments, I'm I'm very loosely saying this in that regard. But between the shows and the movies and even the animated movies, she has had to persistently stand up for herself and show that she is more than just like some right hand woman, or not even right hand, like just some lackey to the Joker, because even the way he treated her was just as a tool to like a particular end, never as a person herself.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, his favorite tool, but a tool nonetheless.
SPEAKER_10She's constantly fighting for her own identity.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And I I do agree, like her at the beginning, or not the beginning, but her in that scene when she's at the bar, and I think that is Birds of Prey, where she's like so down and out, and then you know, you know, they still think that she's with the Joker, even though she hasn't been with them for weeks, and you know, they're still giving her drinks and nobody's kicking her out of the bar, and just that drowning herself trying to it's decipher all of the thoughts and all of the emotions and all of the feelings, and then eventually, you know, when they start figuring it out and they're like, Yeah, why are we still why are we still tapping into this? You're not even with them anymore. And then it becomes, you know, headlines and shit. It's it's just the the the the process of her figuring out herself and her standing on her own is is is such a uh it was such a feel good moment throughout the entire movie. Girl, oh my god, yes, girl. I am so sorry for those who are listening. Uh uh You did that shit on purpose, cosplay has officially done it again. She's doing this, uh, and we're like in the middle of talking, and then she busts out with these cosplayers. And I I was just saying yesterday, you know what?
SPEAKER_10You gotta give us some warning and some like can you flash a light next time?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, come on, give us a twirl. Let us see, let us see. Come on, yes, yes, work, glory, yes, sir. Yeah, tens across the board, bitch. Yes. I I do you want us to?
SPEAKER_01Well, I guess it's gonna come out on Wednesday. So do you mind if you tell them what's going on? Okay, I just posted it, so I'm like, so I mean, granted, Instagram must have beat us to it, but here's uh Visayame Cosplay then turned on her camera and she out here uh uh uh uh looking look look looking like Martin, not looking, she is Marge Simpson out this joint. Uh uh somebody else explain because I can't talk no more.
SPEAKER_05Miss Simpson, if you're nasty.
SPEAKER_11Tony is at the bar.
SPEAKER_01So like it gives me it gives me whenever Marge gets out the pool. Like that's literally her hair falls to her shoulders down her back. This is what it is.
SPEAKER_11I wanted to show my family, you know, before I wash this shit off.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you know, girl is curling, yellow is yellowing.
SPEAKER_10No, yellow, yellowing.
SPEAKER_05That's another woman that needs an episode.
SPEAKER_01Marge Simpson. The shit she puts up with her and Lois. Lois.
SPEAKER_11I didn't mean to interrupt y'all.
SPEAKER_05I just yes, yes, the fuck you did.
SPEAKER_11Don't let you know that though. I didn't mean to do that.
SPEAKER_05You said let me come in and let me come in and stop the show real quick.
SPEAKER_11You know, I was trying to do a little bit of Leo energy, you know.
SPEAKER_10You know, I'm here for it. I'm here for it. You know that.
SPEAKER_11You know, okay, carry on. I apologize. No problem.
SPEAKER_01No problem. You don't even know what we were talking about. I don't either. Who's talking? Was it me? I think so. Oh, Jesus. I I'm I'm definitely off. I don't remember what I was talking about. Um crap.
SPEAKER_05Uh we're talking about Harleen and her stint through the movies.
SPEAKER_01Right, right, right. Just seeing that growth was definitely very um, it was very um, I ain't got no words. Somebody else take over. Uh I can't finish what I'm talking about.
SPEAKER_05Um, I agree with you, but that that growth was it was really it was needed. We needed to see it. Um and I think that we didn't just need to see it for Harlene's sake, but we needed to see it for the sake of her position in the DCEU. Because you know, regardless of where she ends up, right? Because the the Suicide Squad movies have a much different flavor as compared to um Aquaman and Wonder Woman and you know, the the Batman and Superman movies and stuff like that. Um, and even still, like, even compared to Shazam, I think the closest thing to it would be Shazam, like as far as tone is concerned. Um, it's a lot more fun, you know, it's a lot less, it's a lot more carefree as a film. Um so in the uh that's one thing I know that I'm particularly nervous about when Margot Robbie's character potential the potential for Margot Robbie's um Harley Quinn to end up somewhere in the greater DCEU amongst these other characters because their feels are so different and their personalities are different, and the tones of their films are much more serious for the most part. I think she would be better, she would better interact with like um The Flash, uh Shazam, and Aquaman because the tones of their particular characters um are you know a lot long closer to the lines and the tone of a Suicide Squad film. Of course, not exactly there, um, but just you know, the way that they are portrayed throughout the film is you know more relatable as far as the Suicide Squad movie is concerned. But when you start getting to those Wonder Womans and those Batmans and Supermans, it's it's a lot more difficult. Um yeah, only thing I'm worried about. And I think people love the Snyder verse or whatever the fuck that was supposed to be. But um the tone doesn't suit the larger vision, it only suits a very particular vision. And yeah, but that aside, that larger concern aside, uh, I agree with you. Yeah, no, the the the story arc that we got for her throughout those films was definitely necessary. And it was it was it felt good to see.
SPEAKER_01So we've predominant, not predominantly, we've pretty much gotten a very serious thought-provoking, questionable joker uh throughout the DCU uh so far. Uh or DC what DCCU? I don't know what they call me. Oh, extended, there it is. So we've gotten a very serious joker this entire time, you know. Heath Ledger, uh uh I'm sure there were other ones. Um, but uh based off what you just said, and I agree with it, if we had say Margot Robbie's uh Roby's um uh Harley in that Batman or um any of the other Batmans that have come out in like the last five to ten years, uh, she wouldn't really fit in any of them. Um, and you know, I'm I'm and I'm thinking more so being alongside Joker. Like you would either have to, and although she worked, like I don't think Margot Roby's uh uh Harley isn't too far off from the Harley from the Batman animated series. It's I'm not gonna say spot on, but it's very, very close in terms of not necessarily being comedic relief, but being kind of that spontaneous, humorous, but still whoop your ass and kill you type of vibe. So, you know, when I was watching, I'm and please anybody else jump in, but when I was watching the Batman Animated Series and you had um uh you had Joker come on the scene and then eventually Harley would show up, it would the scene would get lighter, brighter colors, the Joker's, you know, gags, all that stuff. So it would get brighter from the more serious noir, gothic noir feel of Batman the animated series. You still have it in there, but they brighten up the screen. So when you switch it to live action, and here comes the question um, do you feel like in a and Bafflick isn't doing it anymore? So it's what uh Patterson, Robert, Robert. If Robert is it Pattinson or Patterson? Sorry, thank you, Pattinson. Um Pattinson? It's Pattinson. Pattinson. So if when Robert Pattinson real quick, let's Google real quick.
SPEAKER_10Don't ask me. I don't even know why. Edward, that's all Edward, Edward.
SPEAKER_01So when Robert Pattinson becomes becomes a Batman, and I'm maybe or maybe not, they may not do it, but maybe they'll give him a Joker uh within the first, if unless it's good in the second movie, eventually, like you said, uh the Black McCoy, they're they're gonna try to create this larger combined universe. Do you feel like if they make it kind of like this gothic noir type feel with Robert Pattinson, will they be able to translate that same kind of comedic relief, comedic feel from Batman, the animated series with Harley, uh uh Harley Quinn if she joins him on screen, or do you think they should just keep it separate altogether? I actually want to start with uh uh Kaze because it looks like you have something bubbling or turning in your mind.
SPEAKER_05I saw them eyes darken.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_06It's it's all it's already uh confirmed that this is a standalone movie. He's he's not part of the uh DCE. Thank you.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no. I was I was more so asking, let's say they it it goes amazing and they decide let's go ahead and make another Justice League, and then let's go ahead and add the suicide. Okay, Tiffany. Hi, Tiffany. Um, and let's go ahead and add, you know, I'm more so saying hypothetically, do you feel like it could work or should they just keep it separate like they're doing?
SPEAKER_10Hell no, it's not hell no, it's not gonna work. First of all, uh when you look at when you look at the the the DC E U, whatever the fuck the whole shit is fucked up. All of it is fucked up because honestly, if they if they couldn't try, they couldn't try to mesh them together like the MCU if they tried at at this point. All of the shit, all of the all of the movies to me are they're all standalone. They're all standalone. I I don't see, I don't really understand even barely the Justice League is is meshing to get like one like Wonder Woman and and fucking Aquaman, all that shit, none of that shit look like it go together to me. Like none of it, none of them are complementary to each other outside of the fact that the the character that I mean the the actor that was playing the character is in this movie and and was also in the justice, like but outside of that, they all look like they belong to different like people. Like, oh okay, we made a movie, and you know, like it's literally like the the first set of X-Men movies, like somebody else created that, they don't belong over here, like what like like none of them look like they they could mesh together. Like if I if they ever tried to like put Margot Robbie and uh what what's what's her name? Uh Ann Hathaway in the same movie, like come on, dog, what not Anne Hathaway, I wasn't even thinking about her. Yeah, she was a fucking catwoman. How how even they don't even they not even on the same plane, like them together, like trying to act together.
SPEAKER_08I couldn't even oh bruh.
SPEAKER_07I would push back again.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, this is gonna be deep.
SPEAKER_07I agree and disagree with everything Miss Skittles just said.
SPEAKER_04I'm in the same camp.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, and I'll because do I think they could do it? Yes, would it be the same character? Fuck no. It would have to be it would have to be so it's it's kind of like the the perfect that might think of is look what they did with the Joker when they made Joking Phoenix a Joker. Was it the same joker? Was it kind of the same Joker? I mean, you know, look the same stuff. But the way he put about things, the way he acted, the reason why he did the shit, like it was it was it was very different. It was a very much more disturbed looking joker. It was like a much more disturbed looking joker. It couldn't have been the same aloof fucking Harley Quinn that we we've known and grown to like. It would have to be this deeply rooted, fucked up lady that would not be the same character that gets it to everybody that everybody in some way should be formed like to understand. It would have to be one of those days where it's like we transformed this Harley Quinn. And though she talks the same, she doesn't necessarily look the same, and she damn sure does not act the same. Margot Robbie could not play this this Harley Quinn for. Because now this is going to take an actor who can like how Joking Phoenix brought about the Joker that we now know in comparison to the Joker that Heath Ledger did, or the Joker that Jack Nicholson did, or the Joker that, you know, gotta, I don't want to admit to Jiggal Joker, but yeah, but people forget about Jack Nicholson playing Joker. I was actually I didn't forget about Forget Low Nicholson.
SPEAKER_01I wasn't just I wasn't putting up because Harley Quinn didn't exist back then.
SPEAKER_07But it's like, yeah, but that's that's what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_01That's like a joker.
SPEAKER_07But I don't think Harley Quinn could necessarily go into a serious movie like how the joke how jokey is he's a good joker. And that would be a good thing. I feel like he's saying joking purpose. Oh, okay. Vibe with that Harley Clinton. Like it would not be the same Harley Clinton we know about. It would have to be something extremely depressing.
SPEAKER_05So I I wanna I wanna agree and disagree as well.
SPEAKER_01With Tiffany, I'm sorry, with Miss Kittles or with Shammy B. Both.
SPEAKER_05Do I think that they should like ram these movies together? Um yeah. Anyway, um flashback. Um, do I think they should uh ram these movies together? Absolutely not. Do I think that these characters could come together, particularly Marvel Robbie's Harley Quinn? Um, and sure, let's go ahead and throw Ann Hathaway's uh Catwoman to there as well. I would say yes, and I say yes on two conditions. Um the first being that it would take a it would take a really, really good writer. A lot of the problem with some of these films is that the writers don't have the writers individually or collectively do not have the the cohesion or maybe even the imagination or even the the ability to bring together characters from these like very different uh personalities and tones uh and backgrounds into a space where they can um interact with each other and for all intents and purposes uh understandable, palatable, and realistic way. Um, my second is that particularly when it comes to Margot Robbie and when it comes to Ann Hathaway, both of those bitches got range. They have hella range. And as actress as actresses, I have seen them do so many different roles outside of the ones that we're talking about specifically. And because I know that Margot Robbie has been able to play a number of different characters, it would not be um, I don't, I I think it's extremely possible for both her and Anne and Anne Hathaway. I don't know, it was hard to say that for some reason. Both her and Ann Hathaway would be able to create a dynamic between her Harley Quinn as well as her catwoman that would create that would be that would be that would be good. That would be great representations because Margot Robbie has shown herself to be the actress that can play this kind of like really heightened, you know, really outlandish character, that at the same time be able to very much ground that character in a way that connects with audiences and simultaneously be able to show the range of emotion and ability within that character herself. And I think that's largely what I attribute large a lot of that to Birds of Prey, as well as to this most recent Suicide Squad film. Um, just even though Harley Quinn did not have like the same amount of time that she had in the first Suicide Squad movie, in my opinion, the time that we spent with her was much more intentional. And we got to see Margot Robbie's uh ability to bring that kind of character to life without using some lines and being able to show us who Harley Quinn was and the growth she had gone through and her ability to really be able to handle herself. Um, and it's interesting though, when as I talk about it, that particular scene where she was able to, you know, steal the keys and like kill the guards, steal the keys and break out of that mansion on her own, um, is not something that I don't think like an Ann Hathaway cat woman would like look at or be able to see or interact with and be like, oh, like I don't like we don't belong together. Like, no, but that was some bad bitch shit. And I could see them like having a mutual respect for one another because of the different abilities and you know the different ways in which they go about things. So I want to disagree on that point because I think that the two actresses alone would be able to make that happen regardless of the film that it's in, even if the or even if the rest of the film was terrible, even if it was like a piece of horse shit thrown around in some flies and like digested and through a human centipede and put on a plate, like they would be able, their performances individually and both together would be able to develop something that at bare minimum is able to stand out in a film that's that bad.
SPEAKER_07But I gotta catch you real quick because I'm like doing this, I'm just thinking Christopher Nolan's movies weren't that far off of a DC EU movie. Yeah, no, they weren't. But it's like I can I can actually und agree with everything you just said. I can see that working. I can't see her doing a serious role. She's had some serious roles, but she kind of played the same character. Like this was a little bit more whimsical than normal, but yeah, this is kind of the same character.
SPEAKER_05So it's like I would also attribute part of that to just the roles that she keeps getting put in. Typecasting, yeah. She does I would attribute that to some some to some degree uh being like some typecasting.
SPEAKER_07Um that's I I agree with that. I will agree with that. But when I look at it as like what they did with, like I said, that which is why I kept pointing out Joe King Phoenix's, or what is it Joe King or is it something else? Joaquin. Joaquin. Joaquin, there it goes. Joachim Phoenix. When um I look at Joaquin Phoenix's Joker and compare that, I'm like, nah, they they they are not, he's not the same as these legs, way more seriously.
SPEAKER_05Absolutely not, or like this. Joaquin Phoenix's Joker was not was nowhere near DCEU. Yeah, Joaquin.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I didn't again, that's a movie I didn't want to watch because it seemed a lot less comic book and a lot more realistic. Yeah, it was more like a documentary.
SPEAKER_08It was phenomenal.
SPEAKER_01I didn't say it wasn't. I heard it was, but it seemed more like a documentary than it did a comic book oriented.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, he feels like you're gonna do that with Patterson's Batman. I feel like the Batman is gonna fall in the same road with you're gonna feel way more disturbing watching that.
SPEAKER_08Oh, not with him.
SPEAKER_07Oh no, don't do that.
SPEAKER_10Don't don't don't do that, development. Look, that man ain't never gonna be no more than the Edward to me.
SPEAKER_07I just had I had to literally go because I hated him. I hated him with a passion. A lot of people didn't trash.
SPEAKER_05I like everybody ruined a lot of the actors like tenure, like, but I feel it's my life film. Um, between things and who paid who played Bella or whatever the fuck or whatever her name is. She's trash too. She's actually trash. Wait, don't bring her up.
SPEAKER_08But she was bad before that. She was bad.
SPEAKER_01I told you there are people in this panel that are gonna attack her. Don't bring her up.
SPEAKER_10No, I'm not gonna attack her, but she was bad. Because she was bad at Snow White after that.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I told you.
SPEAKER_10I feel like some actors, they just be when they play in like when they play in like series, like movies like that, that that's what they become. So when it really you just like nah, this is not working for me. Like, like uh what's uh like fucking Harry Potter. He's been in other movies, and and and I can't get past him being Harry Potter. So when I'm like that played, who was it, the the Wolf in Twilight?
SPEAKER_07Oh no, it's happening too.
SPEAKER_10Let's just say you can't you add in your head, like I'm watching this movie literally waiting for this nigga turn into all these, I'm not watching.
SPEAKER_07But the reason the reason why I say that is because with Patterson, I've watched other Patterson movies, and because of how good of an actor he was in those movies, I was actually able to separate him from Twilight. You can't separate none of the other people from Twilight because they that bad. They're just that simple. Like they can't say that is really dangerous.
SPEAKER_06Twilight was their best performance. That's why you can't.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, no, like people that's like Twilight's daddy's bad bad and he kept his shirt on.
SPEAKER_06You didn't, you, you, you, you lost your money.
SPEAKER_07Like the only reason, like the only reason why people can't see his master wear will be because he's wearing a shirt for all of those movies. You know, you got to wear the shirt in his movies. Like that actor movie, though he's acting like shirt off, but you still say bad actors. Like that's the James. Like what the only reason why you expected to be a CG or be a wolf is because the CG bobby looks better than what he did when you filled the person, you find that oh shit, he's actually a really horrible actor, but he's a better voice actor than this wolf. That's what we said, like, oh yeah. Yeah, well, yeah, but like exactly. But that's what I'm saying. When you took him away from the wolf altogether, he was a bad bad bad inches.
SPEAKER_01He was just bad in Charlie's Angels. He was not a big thing. But that's not the point.
SPEAKER_07She was bad in Charlie's Angels.
SPEAKER_01He was not that bad at the end.
SPEAKER_10The whole Charlie's Angels movie was trash, but that was bad.
SPEAKER_07That was a bad movie.
SPEAKER_10We're not even gonna go into that. Uh back to Harley Quinn.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, like the Harley Quinn. I can't see Harley Quinn in that same role as a Padison or as a uh uh Joaquin because, like I said, of how all that works. But she could have definitely been a Christopher Nolan movie because that was just what if DCEU was successful?
SPEAKER_05I think I agree with you there. Like she could have been in a Nolan movie because that the Joaquin Phoenix movie was amazing, but it was much more character driven and it was focusing on a singular kind of issue topic person. Like it wasn't a comic, like like uh Suchi was saying, it wasn't a comic book movie. It was uh it was a character-driven narrative, and I think that's what made it stand out from the rest of DCEU because it wasn't trying to be like super mega maniacal, it wasn't trying to be um like insert this like super genius and super genius crazy person into this role. It was really just a study of a person's descent into uh madness and their recollection of this story, but then understanding that the story that we were watching could very well be um an unreliable, it could not have even happened because you know the Joker is known for being an unreliable narrator in the same way that Harley Quinn is known for being an unreliable narrator because of their psychosis. So, no, no, no, you're absolutely right. She could not be in that kind of film. Um, one, because it's a standalone film and they know it's not supposed to be a part of the DCEU at large, but also because, yeah, it's it's a completely different kind of story.
SPEAKER_07And that that's trying to be that's trying to be deranged, and it would the the look at you know, abuse and and everything and relationships would I don't think America's even ready to see that type of stuff. Because then you would have to include the story of her and Joker. You couldn't do the Harley Quinn story without Joker, which means you have to talk about that abuse that took place, which means you have to have a really deep look at like how like stock homes and it would work in a relationship and stuff like that. America ain't ready for that.
SPEAKER_01One of I mean they're not one idea, and I was about to say one, I'm gonna say two things. So, one, I agree that she could be in a Christopher Nolan movie, she could act in a Christopher Nolan movie. I think my issue would be with her uh uh aside and Hathaway across from whoever Batman's going to be, and maybe with a Joker, is that at this point, unless she's going to be um I think it'd be weird to take her from the Harley Quinn that they've now created to then kind of bring her back in terms of some of the insanity, not insanity, in terms of the comedy and make it a little bit more darker. I think it might take away from what she's created so far. That's point, I think. That's point one. That's just my thought.
SPEAKER_06I I agree.
SPEAKER_01Nolan is not funny, right?
SPEAKER_06I not only one moment.
SPEAKER_10Exactly. That's exactly my point. I just cannot see them in the same realm.
SPEAKER_06Like, I just can't uh but I think I don't think the opposite is true. I think you could have to, I think you can take like because like like like the black McCoy said, uh Ann Hathaway is talented. You can you can take her and and put that anywhere under James Gunn. Oh no, no, no.
SPEAKER_01In the inverse, oh yeah, easily that would work. Yeah, yeah. Because when she was in Oceans 8, she was hilarious.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah, she was hilarious in Oceans 8. She was hilarious in that movie that she did with um um fuck McCarthy.
SPEAKER_01Oh Jesse McCarthy, uh not Jesse. Melissa McCelissa McCarthy, sorry.
SPEAKER_05I forgot the movie though, but yes.
SPEAKER_01Uh, but yeah, and then my fucking I forgot my second point because cut me off. Uh crap. What was my second point? Was good too.
SPEAKER_05Crap, crap. Okay, somebody else take over. I think that a Margot Robbie, I think that if we did have a Harley Quinn in like uh a Nolan style movie, I don't think it would need to be like funny, funny. I think we would need like those little moments. Um, because Nolan movies, at least from my perspective, are very plot and character driven, more so plot driven than character driven. I think that it would be an opportunity to have more serious moments with Harley Quinn and more vulnerable moments with Harley Quinn that we have that that we've had than we've had that weren't paired with some degree of like comedy or jest. And you know, like Nolan movies do have like little bits of humor here and there, but they're conversational. It's a conversational humor, it's not like gag humor or physical humor, which is Harley Quinn. Right. Not all the time.
SPEAKER_01I mean, not all the time. I'm just saying, like even in the fight scenes, that that's kind of where her gag is. It's the it's the thing she does.
SPEAKER_05And I think that it's there's I think and I I and I I think my imagination, there isn't there isn't a way where she can't somehow fit into that. Like again, like I imagine, yes, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Nolan, no.
SPEAKER_05No, I know that's what I'm saying. I think it would take the right kind of right. I think Nolan could do it. It wouldn't look how people would want it to look or how they would expect it to look. And I think that that is the very important pivotal layer here is that when it comes to audience viewership, there is a strong entitlement to what we want things to look like or what we think they should look like, but almost kind of uh arresting our own imagination as to what it can look like. And I think that might that sound like what the barrier is to me in this particular conversation. It's it's it's very possible because these characters, for all intents and purposes, are still people that have their own like various ranges of who they are, and being able to explore those in different avenues.
SPEAKER_01Um I'm not I'm not saying that, well, at least for me, I don't know about everybody else. I'm not saying the character, I'm not saying the actors or actress, sorry, the actors can't portray those characters in these different styles. I'm more so saying the style that each director has created for his movie would not fit the other style that the director has created for that character.
SPEAKER_05So Bertray That's that that I'm that's also what I mean as well. Like regardless of the director, regardless of the act, well, not regardless of the actors, because the actors themselves are kind of pivotal to this conversation, but regardless of the director, right? I think the regardless of who we use as a director for that particular kind of cast or that setting, even you know, specifically with Harley Quinn, it's just a matter of what side of Harley Quinn are we going to be able to see in this moment with this particular director? We've seen what Harley Quinn can look like with whoever did whatever they did with that first Suicide Squad movie. We saw the perspective of Harley Quinn from the Birds of Prey movie. We saw a heart, we saw a part of Harley Quinn when it came to a James Gunn movie. But a hard part of Harley, what part of Harley Quinn would we see through the eyes of Christopher Nolan? Like what more vulnerable parts of her have we not gotten at gotten access to cinematically that we would get access to through a perspective like James Nolan? Not I said James Nolan, Christopher Nolan. See? I was like, wait, something didn't sound right there.
SPEAKER_06I think I I agree. I think Nolan could uh depict an interesting Harley. I don't think he, I don't think he would have. I think he he we he we we like like cat like again. I didn't hate, I I like I like Hathaway, but she was she was barely utilized, but Robin was a tease. Uh he was fucking wasted. Like it was like it was really just the it was just like the bat, it was like the Batman and Joker show, like for for most, you know, for most.
SPEAKER_05That's most Batman properties, let's be honest.
SPEAKER_06Uh yeah, but again, but we but we we've seen in these other things that you know you can focus on these other characters and give them give them their moments. Nolan wouldn't have given given her moments her moments, so yeah, yeah, it is in his abilities to do it, but no, that's not what we would have gotten, um, which is unfortunate because I because I would I would like to see a stay.
SPEAKER_01Has anybody heard or played the game um uh Alice in Madness?
SPEAKER_05I've seen it, I heard of it. I haven't gotten a chance to play it because when I was young, my mom wouldn't buy it for me.
SPEAKER_07I've heard I've heard it. Um I didn't necessarily get to play it, but I'll see some uh gameplay footage of it.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, I think I was one of the games I wanted to play.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So I I I I played all the way through it.
SPEAKER_05It's a I played all the way through it. I'm just kidding.
SPEAKER_01Um that was ridiculous. Anyway, no, I played all the way through it. It it the the game itself is very dark and twisted. It it it it views Alice as pretty much a psychosis patient patient. Um, she all of Wonderland was completely fake. Uh it was nothing but her being, it was pretty much like a Harley Quinn dream. But but the difference is everything she was doing, she was actually murdering people. So, right. So it's it's it's like when she's you know drinking teas, it's people's blood. When she's uh uh going down the rabbit hole, she was actually sliding down like a shoot and landing on people. Like there was this whole dark kind of old English. Uh I think I said it in one of our previous gaming episodes. Uh, the um what was it, we lucky few or we are the people, whatever game that is, it has that type of vibe in terms of its artistic uh comparisons. And the reason why I'm bringing this up is kind of the dark elements of a Christopher Nolan film is kind of how it could be painted. And then to justify the humor or justify kind of the happy things you may see from Harley Quinn, you can then bring it back to this like kind of dark uh Allison and madness type of vibe where she she sees all the happiness, but in reality, it's kind of these dark things that are going on. I was just thinking that's a a way they could potentially spin the movie. But that's like if you if you haven't already seen it, listeners or panelists.
SPEAKER_05Huh? I would love to see that actually. That'd be amazing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I if if they can pull it off, I think it would be very it would be a it look like uh like Kazi was saying, uh, could Nolan do it? Yes. And could Nolan have done it? Probably not, but if Nolan was to do it this way, I think he'd be able to paint it really well. I don't think I've ever seen a Nolan film with CGI in it, so that would scare me as well. But um if he had somebody good on his team, that might work, in my personal opinion.
SPEAKER_05I think given how Eternals might go, I would I would give that project to Chloe Zhao.
SPEAKER_01I uh uh okay, sure.
SPEAKER_05Only because she's no, she's a good she's a really great director, she's had a lot of really good work, and um I with depending on how she handles the eternals, I would put that just like Fox, just like Fox, uh Warner Brothers is very particular about who they hire and they like using the same people over and over again. So we know that that's how they got into where they were in some of their failures.
SPEAKER_01I agree. I'm just saying, like I think that's why we're gonna. Like, I I don't I don't especially I don't see them picking somebody who Marvel has recently used. Like they would have to get like a whole new team to be like, hey, let's let's let's do what we need to do to get you know they just got James Gunn.
SPEAKER_05So right, like they just used James Gunn.
SPEAKER_01No, no, what I'm saying is originally that's not what they were doing. I think they got a new team that is now like, let's get what we need to get to get these better movies out there, is what I'm kind of what I was saying. Yeah, but anyway, uh okay, wrapping up this wonderful Harley Quinn episode. Uh, I actually found out again while doing my during the podcast uh research, uh, is that uh DC announced that February is Harley Quinn month. Who knew? Oh, you should have told Miss Skittles that, Lord.
SPEAKER_05She's like, oh, the looks better than that.
SPEAKER_01Um what happened?
SPEAKER_09I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_01No, I just I just uh I just I was looking up some things and I found that the DC named February Harley Quinn month.
SPEAKER_05Yes, so now it's gonna be 28 days of black cosplay. It's going to be 28 days of Harley Quinn as well as Black History Month. And um
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think there's like a music something in there too. Yeah, I think Black Music Month as well.
SPEAKER_05I think so.
SPEAKER_01Wow, that's a lot.
SPEAKER_05Uh we'll see. Okay. Miss Kittles are like, oh, it's gonna be a business. It's on and popping. Oh y'all gonna get at least five different Harley Quinn looks.
SPEAKER_10That's like uh choosy and I found out that Harley Quinn was born, she's a 90s baby.
SPEAKER_01She is. She's she's 31.
SPEAKER_0931, July 20th, 1990.
SPEAKER_01She was born in 90s.
SPEAKER_05Oh wow, her day, her birthday is a day before my mom's birthday.
SPEAKER_01Crazy. She's accomplished a lot. I think we're she's a can't.
SPEAKER_05So not only is she a 90, she was almost like she's a cancer.
SPEAKER_01She was almost a Leo.
SPEAKER_05I think she's going to let everybody knows. Almost doesn't have.
